SO this is MY FIRST post on this website/forum so here it goes . . . I have a SEAL SOG knife I purchased from the Fort Hood PX back in 2001 (right after 9/11 I didn't want to use an Army issued Bayonet when we went to Iraq) and have recently gotten into Pig hunting and want to start using this knife as my go-to hunting knife. I had a Professional Knife Maker/sharpener take the serrations out and put an extra edge opposite of the main blade (to give it a K-bar like look and feel). I really want to get rid of the hard plastic handle and put either a Micarta or carbon fiber handle with a solide steel pommel.

My question(s) are:
1) is there a factory produced handle that is available or should I look to build my own?
2) I want the handle to be thiner and with a better texture than the current hard plastic, so what do people recomend?
3) the ROckwell hardness factor is 55-56 . . . I want it higher. The steel AUS-6, so should I try to use cyanide or possibly just use heat?cold treatment?
4) Making a leather Sheath for it, would it be best to do the handle in TWO compnents, a guard and handle or just in one piece? I want to be able to carry the knife scout style, in the small of my back, so what is the best way to do this?

I would not attempt to harden the blade more. It might end up making it to brittle and ruin the heat treat altogether.
For the handle-
I think removing that handle material will be a bit of a fight but can be done. The existing handle looks molded on. You’ll need to figure out mounting holes and whether to pin the new handle or use screws.

Thansk to everyone thus far!!!! Terotuf, I will check it out!

@ 115 Italian, getting the old handle off HAS been a bit of a chore but is doable . . . I want to use rivets to hold the new handle (whatever materail it is) together, so my next step is to figure out drill holes, does anyone have any ideas about drill bit strength/type etc?

If the tang is hardened you’ll need a special bit to drill it. A regular metal cutting drill bit may not work.
Chicago screws could work as an option for handle scale attachment
