This week NBC Nightly News is running a special segment about Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.
Tonight they spotlighted the oldest living recipient of the 109 alive, a 92 year old WW2 vet named Joe Finn. He was a gunner at Pearl Harbor, and on Dec 7, 1941, apparently dragged a machine or AA gun out into the open and stood there alone shooting at the enemy through the whole attack, with the smoke "as his only shield". He took 21 shrapnel wounds and a round through his foot and kept firing. For his heroism above and beyond the call he was awarded the Medal of Honor. In his interview, he said he didn't think he was doing anything special other than what they had paid him to do.
A really spry old guy, he delivered the line of the segment when his elderly housekeeper told him, "Joe, you have to come in the house now." He responded with a sly gleem in his eye, "Are we going in the bedroom?" Ya gotta love a dirty old man with a MoH.
I don't usually watch the news on TV, but I'm glad I happened to have it on. I think I'll watch the rest of these segments, too, now. Stories of real life heroes help make us better human beings. I also don't tear up too often, but I did tonight....
Just thought some others else might like to watch these, too.
