This is probably the wrong thread, but I still can't find anything on this new format.

Anyways, I'm 16, I've been shooting since I was about 13; I've fired an MP5 10mm, a Remmington 870, my dad's Glock 22, a Colt M4, and I have a M&P15-22. (I've also shot a few other handguns and a 10 gauge shotgun that I don't know the name of) Anyways, I was wondering what the laws are to go to the firing range by yourself. I assume it's 18 or 21? Are there any courses you can take for this? If not, are there any courses that I can take that will help me improve myself? I want to join the Marine Corps, so I'd like to familiarize myself with firearms as much as possible.

Seeing as how you can't be the legal owner of any firearm until you're 18, I can't see how any range is going to let you shoot by yourself.

Well, since you are a minor I don't think that you would be allowed your own lane. You might want to call Shooters Express, a little west of Charlotte and see what they have to say. Other than that, you might have to go to one of the private members only gun clubs that they like to have out there.

Also since you are a minor, you can't rent any of the handguns at the range, let alone buying ammo.

As a minor, you really need to go with a parent or some other adult who can "supervise" things and buy ammo. In regards to prep'ing for the Marine Corps, be careful about developing bad habits on your own. Basic Training for the Marines will teach you good marksmanship. Once you get out of basic, that's the time to refine your skills and go for marksmanship badges.

If you want to develop good technique, consider shooting a good air rifle. Seriously ... an air rifle will quickly point out bad shooter technique. It's not macho but, great for training and developing good shooter technique.

in NC you will have to check with your county. some counties allow you have one at 18 and some wont allow it until you are 21
