I have wanted a Nealy MCSknife since I first saw them and finally got one a couple of weeks ago. As a brand new as yet unrealesed knife from Mr. Nealy is currently being passed around I thought I would post some comments on one of his older models.

The knife I have features a five inch blade of ats34 with g10 scales attached by screws. The blade is a modified persian style with some extra thickness at the tip for strength. You can see it at Bud's site (budnealyknifemaker.com). Having never handled one of these knives before my first surprise was just how flat the knife really is. This knife is designed for concealed carry so this is a very good thing. The edge was hair flinging sharp and the handle is extremely well designed. There is nothing that could be considered a guard on this knife but the finger choil and pinky hook and serration points combine to make the knife feel very secure. I wouldn't want to try stabbing through a trauma plate but overall I think security is adequate for SD use and more then secure and comfortable for utility. The long curving edge seems to lend itself to slashing and the knife felt excellent in reverse grips both edge in and edge out and in either of these grips capping the pommel with the thumb is super comfy and "locks" the knife in place. The handle is contoured in such a way that the edge inn (pyckal?) grip is much more comfotable then many other knives, though it seems that those who prefer this grip prefer blades that curve in the opposite direction of this one. In my preffered SD grip, edge out with pommel capped the knife feels great and very very solid in the hand. I haven't, nor do I intend to do any heavy cutting tests with this guy, the sharpness and blade shape make me confident that it will perform for SD. It isn't a heavy use knife but for moderate utility it seems like it would be great as well, kitchen, firesticks, anything that relies on a thin shapr edge, I bet it would fillet the hell outta some fishes too.

The MCS (multi concealment system) offers nine carry options and the parts are easily interchanged and all seem to perform as intended. I have been using the IWB loop for carry and despite the five inch blade and fairly wide sheath the package is very comfy and fast to access. The sheath contains a magnet which helps with retention but I am really not sure this isn't over kill. The knife locks into the sheath very well and I am not sure how much extra security the magnet provides. Perhaps relying more on the magnet and removing some of the kydex would make for a slightly ffaster deployment but as is the knife is pretty damn quick into the hand. I am confident that I could carry this knife handle down (allowed for by a couple of the mcs options) and jump up and down and do pretty much anything and the knife would not come loose. Maybe as the kydex loosens up I will begin to appreciate the usefulness of the magnet more.

Ok, long I know so in closing I like the knife very much am confident it will do what its designed for, would make a great light use utility knife, maybe lightweight backpacking or climbing or something. Its not going to be an EDC for me but I am looking for a three inch bladed version of one of Mr. Nealy's MCS knives to fill that role.

I've been carrying my ebony-handled 3.5" Pesh Kabz handle down using the wide clip attachment which allows the sheath to be attached to a pocket; in this case the inside breast pocket of a sport coat. Never have I had a thought of it falling free. It's been one of my favorite EDCs for almost 2 years now!!

I've got three questions for the Pesh Kabz owners. First, how is the blade shape for utility purposes? Does the thickness of the tip make it difficult to use? Is the tip fully sharpened?

I have the CRKT Pesh folder, which I like. The tip was slightly dull and is hard to sharpen and sometimes gets in the way when cutting. I was wondering if the slightly different shape, extra blade length and the custom grind of the real deal eliminates this minor difficulty.

The tip grind EASILY rolls the hair from the back of my hand. As this is only the second time I've used it since I purchased it (yes, the first was also a shaving test:D ) I'm afraid I can't comment on this blade style's utility........not what it was designed for ....not what I bought it for. Sorry!

I should have my Kinzahl in my hands tuesday,i considered the Pesh-Kabz,but the kinzahl will fit my purpose better, all of his knives are super. I will let you know my thoughts on it when i get it.What kind of packageing did yours come with, does all of the accs. have a storage carton?
Thanks Frank C

brownshoe, I was playing with my 3.5" Pesh Kabz last night, and decided to go ahead and use it to prepare dinner. I fixed a pot of vegetables and a salad. The edge glided through tomato and onion, including the thickened tip, which works as if it's just a normal, sharp knife tip. The hollow ground portion is extremely sharp, slicing fresh carrot with no resistance.

My only minimal problem with the handle is that is is just long enough for my fairly wide hand. I wouldn't have minded an extra 1/4". In reverse grip it's perfect, but I'm no ninja, so that doesn't help. :)

A note on tip geometry: the back of the blade retains full thickness until 1/8" from the tip.

fc6968, my MCS pieces are in a plastic bag -- but I got the knife second-hand.

edgetrip, thanks for the review and the mention of the passaround knife, here's a link to the passaround thread.

Bud is a great guy to talk to, he's invited me to his shop many times, he's an average guy like anyone else, he gladly takes the time to answer questions, and his customer service is outstanding.

The Nealy passaround, hopefully will become a common thing if I have any say in it so keep your eyes peeled for more in the future.

He's currently working on a new knife and sheath system that he let us use for the passaround before he even unveiled it at ECCKS this past weekend.

I currently have 2 of his fixed blades, there's usually one attached somewhere for a SD backup.

No problem, glad to hear that Nealy passaround may be happening more.

I did receive my knife from a trade but all the pieces of the mcs system came in a plastic bag with brochure and instructions.

That new design looks like my edc dream, can't wait to get my hands on one.
