My wife and I were cleaning out some old things in a house that belonged to my late Father-in-Law. Amongst some hunting things were found this:

The knife does not appear to have ever been sharpened. There appears to be a little flaw in the delrin by the "Camillus" shield.

I love yeller knives. Should I carry and use this, or put it up out of harms way?

Hard tellin', but it looks like it needs to be used by someone who cared about its previous owner. Just my thoughts. I had a father-in-law that was a knife nut and knife trader and hunter. I still use some he gave me and ones I found after he passed. That's a good dilemma to be in! Either way he'd be honored.

USE IT!! :D

I think Camillus used 440A in most of their knives like this one (compare to the older Buck 300-series folders, made with the same steel by Camillus). It's a very user-friendly stainless steel, sharpens up easily and takes a great edge.

Very nice find!

Not too long ago, I would have been strongly in the Use It camp. (They do have camps, you know, if not as pristine as those of the Put It Ups. Obv.)

However, a recent post by Railsplitter regarding this topic has given me pause:

If you decide to carry it, first ask yourself if your desire to carry it will be long term or short term. I say this because I have made the decision to carry knives that I was on the fence about only to discover after a few weeks or months that I grew tired of the knife. At that point, I found myself wishing I hadn't buggered it up.

I've thought about his words often since reading them, and am glad for new "glasses" through which to look when considering whether or not to subject a certain knife, or other object for that matter, to my uses.

Congratulations again! Enjoy yourself, whatever you decide is right for you and this knife.

Very nice find. I carry or plan to carry every knife that I buy. It's the only way to enjoy them IMO. I know very little about Camillus aside from thier USMC knives. Does the Yellow Jacket version contain significance? Small run, limited numbers? Last out the door before closing?

I've got a soft spot for the Yello Jakets. My Granddad gifted me one (A trapper in yellow Delrin) that had "Bill Boatman's coon skinner" stamped on the spey blade. Bill Boatman owned/owns a coon hunting supply store that was/is quite popular.

Im with ~ P, The Yellow jackets are still out there and still obtainable, you have a near Mint knife-I would buy a used one-and use the hang out of it, I think that these were 90's or late 80's production, so queen this one -use a bought one that is used, and if you like that knife-well, you can carry your Father-in-laws knife on special occasions!

Agreed. Find another and use the heck out of it. Carry your FIL's on "light work" days, or when you want something close to you in your pocket.

Sweet knife! I thought those were a line of carbon-steel knives. Is that right?

Nice.
I would carry and use this knife for very light duty and bragging purposes, but it is your decision.
LOL.

As everyone else has said, that is a really nice find.

I think I will have to go along with the "set this on aside and find a similar user" crowd. Which kind of surprises me, because I buy knives to use. I would probably carry it on special occasions to honor the memory of the man, but have another in my pocket for use.

Nice find :)
I will go a bit against the majority of people here. Since (apparently) this knife is no collector's rarity, I would carry it and use it.
Buying another similar knife and carrying it would be like buying any knife you like, and carrying it.
So, if you like this knife, carry it.
If you don't, put it aside and go on carrying the knives you like (and choose to buy).
As always, my two cents :)

I'm in the "Use it" crowd. Every time you reach in your pocket to fetch it you will have a memory waiting. I just wouldn't have the same experience with one purchased.. just my .02.

I chimed in earlier, on the 'use it' side. Here's another thought that might be worth considering. If (hypothetically) the knife had been gifted to you by your father-in-law, would he have wanted you to use it, or stash it away? I think that would guide my decision, more than anything else. In the interim, even just carrying the knife in-pocket for a while, to see if it's 'comfortable' in that sense, might help you later decide whether to make a true user of it. I have a lot of knives myself, that I separate into another category, as 'light users' to be dedicated to tasks that won't tear them up in short order. That might also be something to consider.

I have an older pocket watch, circa 1915 or so, which my Grandmother gave to me when I was a teenager a long time ago ;). It originally belonged to her father, who was a railroader. The watch is fully functional now, though I did have to have the winding stem replaced; it was broken when she gave it to me. I've been on the fence for a very long time, about whether I should occasionally carry it. I do know that I tend to feel a bit guilty when it's just stashed away in my desk. Having it in my pocket to take out and admire on a regular basis (and listening to it 'tick' is very comforting) is a great way to remember my Grandmother and to think about the life she and her father led a long time ago.
