I was watching Forged In Fire reruns the other day and a contestant had a pretty cool idea to put a dab on super glue on his scale and glue it to his tang to align everything for drilling. A good idea BUT one of the scales stuck to the tang. Trying to remove it he broke the scale.

The other day I saw a tip that had nothing to do with knives but would have saved that contestant a great deal of aggravation. First put down a piece of masking tape on the scale, do the same on the scale, put a drop of superglue on the tape and stick them together. When done just peal off the tape.

I wish I'd have thought that one up but it was someone else's idea for holding a DIY assembly temporarily together.

Good ! But it's important to cover the whole scale and tang w/tape, or a slight angle might result when drilling, potentially leading to much swearing.

tape+CA glue is an old woodworkers trick. Some people just use double stick tape instead. I would suggest a little experimenting beforehand, I've seen people use double stick tape and almsot destroy the pieces getting them apart.

Hi bdmicarta,
Good point about being careful. If the double sided tape or duct tape or masking tape are concerns I'd keep a roll or 2 of Gaffer's tape around. That stuff was made to put on rugs and floors and not harm anything. I don't even buy duct tape anymore
