Anybody here familiar with NEC laptops? I am trying to connect to the wireless network at work. However, I seem to have wireless connectivity turned off. I have tried through the Network manager to turn it back on, to no avail. I have tried the Fn F2 combination and that didn't work either. Any hints?

Not familiar with NEC but I setup a new Toshiba a few weeks ago with integrated wireless and there was an actual switch on the right-hand side of the case that turned the wireless LAN on and off...could be similar on yours but after re-reading your post, it sounds like the wireless device is working. If you are connecting to a wireless access point at a business, it is most likely using some type of encryption to secure the network...either WEP or WPA. I assume you are using XP? You should have a program controlling your wireless connections if you aren't using the one built into XP...either way, it should show you available wireless networks within range and whether or not they are secured or open. Also, if your work/business access point is not broadcasting the SSID, you won't see it available. If encryption is the issue, you simply need to obtain a hexadecimal key to enter in for accessing the network.

Just a thought,

John

I just can't detect the network. Its running, our systems guy showed me how to do it on the school laptop, but mine won't detect. I am running XP, and have a valid logon, but can't get to that stage. The wireless detection icon on the toolbar is checked off. I'm pretty ticked off.

Is the wireless service running? Go to Administrative tools and then Services. Look for the Wireless Zero Config service. Make sure it's set to automatic and started. If you are using some other software aside from Windows to connect, it may have it's own service. Turn off Windows Firewall in the Control Panel until you figure out the connection issue.
