a simple retention loop I made, to secure a neck carry knife, to prevent knife loss when taking a tumble or fall in the woods (hey it happens)

What precautions can be taken to help avoid "hanging" or strangulation or neck jerking/trauma? I use bead chain, but with 550, how does one make it "break away"?

In all my 30+ years of neck carry, i have never had an issue with being strangled by my neck knife cord. I HAVE however had knives slip out during slips and falls. Hence the simple cord retention loop to secure the blade in the leather sheath

I do believe there is zero incidents of strangulation from neck knife carry cords. After all the Laps and others have neck carried knives for hundreds fo years without incident.

Good point. Perhaps I'm just a little paranoid about my neck. Maybe I was hanged or beheaded in a previous life. :D

You can tie one end of the 550 to the other with a double overhand stopper knot - it will allow the cord to slide if it gets caught. If you leave the one end long it also allows you to adjust the length for extra clothing, etc.

An alternate method is to use a small piece of shrink tubing to join the ends.

I thread the bead chain thru the 550.
So I get all the comfort of the 550, and the safety of the ball chain link

I like the technique Bushman, but my days as a paratrooper still give me that strangling fear. I don't even wear my ID tags around my neck. I do the modified neck carry...the MercHarness:D

Actually, when in and around camp, I do carry a small fixed blade around the neck quite often as it's really easy to access when doing food prep or other camp cutting chores:thumbup:

I'm not concerned about strangling, but I cringe when I see people put the knife in the sheath. It looks like they are stabbing themselves in the throat - I keep thinking, if that sheath fails....

Bushman5, I like it. I carry a necker everday too and so far have never had a problem.
That does not mean that it could not happen.

Cool tip. I usually put a ranger band around the sheath and put the knifes lanyard through the band. It holds very well. A little extra security never hurt....
