So I started carrying a fixed blade around the neck again. I am not a fan of the chain that usually comes with neck knives. I find them uncomfortable (cold/hot) and I think they stick out. For a while I used 550 cord but I am older and wiser and find myself concerned with the safety and self defense implications of something that strong around the neck. What do you guys use? FWIW it’s usually an izula II, bk14, small Anza, snody snake charmer, etc. thanks!

I’m a (summer) fan of neck knives too.
How about leather thong vs chain? If getting it grabbed, something to consider, worries you, if lightly notched, it would breakaway.D9A93994-39D5-47F8-9652-00EC6C6467CE.jpeg
a couple more are missing…the Spyderco is a tad heavy on the neck.

A couple options....

Hollow out some paracord (remove the inner nylon strands) and feed the chain through the paracord. No need to knot the paracord, the chain will keep it in place. No worries about safety.

Second, there are several knots that are "quick release" and will come undone with moderate strain, but still more than secure enough for neck carry with paracord.

When I was thinking about this, my plan was one of those cheap breakaway lanyard buckles that paracord fits through. Then, if you want to pull it off the cord, you can just grab both sides of cord below the buckle.
Big River site has magnetic clasps..

Lots of good ideas here. Thx.

Never would have thought of the chain thru paracord trick. I will try that and try some of the other accessories as well.

I would just be concerned that the magnetic breakaway would breakaway when ur drawing the knife.

On the 550 cord, take out all the inner strands except for one. Use that last strand to pull the ball-chain necklace through. Cut to the right length and melt the ends a little just shy of the clasp. It keeps it comfortable, quiet, and won’t slide around near as much…

I found about these connectors when a couple knives I ordered from White River knives came with them. I liked them so well I called and asked where they got them. They told me so I called and ordered a few. Can't remember the name of the company since it's been quite a while back. At any rate they work really well and will not come apart accidently. You got to jerk really hard to get them apart. Just run your cord through and melt the end into a little ball.View attachment 2028638

You can give this a try; it takes some force to pull apart. This is buried in the thread I referred to so I'll post it directly.

One modification that should make it easier to pull apart is to feed only the line (without making a bight) through the overhand knot. However, make sure you do not burn the ends of the line as this forms a knob that prevents it from sliding through.
