Neck Knife Uses Vs. Folder Uses?

I just picked up my first neck knife, a Jason Brous Silent Soldier Ranger, and I was wondering how you guys decide between using a neck knife vs using a folder for a task. Is having both on you at once a little redundant or is it a good idea?

It depends on your situation. For edc, that would be a little redundant for me, but for camping or hiking, it would be fine. Generally, they will do the same tasks, but I've found that, for whatever reason, a knife that folds is less alarming than one that doesn't, even if the folder is bigger... Whatever. Also, the neck knife requires much less maintenance and is most likely much stronger than the folder, so would be better in an emergency

I think both at once is a bit superfluous. The necker is going to be easier to clean if you're skinning small game for example.

I'm looking at the brous silent soldier wharncliffe model. I like the idea of having the knife around my neck as it frees up pocket space(especially when I'm at the office). The only thing that's holding me back is I'm worried that LEO's here in Vancouver might consider it brass knuckles due to the design.

Out of the box, I think it's okay. It feels really nice in the hand, but it did come(straight from Jason Brous) with about 5 small rust spots already on it. It's not a huge deal, but considering it's a med-tech knife and that it's not exactly a "cheapo", the rust spots are a little surprising. Maybe I just got a lemon tho...

I currently own a SS Drop Point necker and an SS Ranger. I use them if I want to switch things up a bit and give my folders a break. "Variety is the spice of life," as they say. They are very useful if you're wearing clothes without pockets or a belt loop.

I love both of mine, but I like the drop point better than the Ranger. The fit is better in my hands and the stonewash finish hides wear better than the Ranger's satin finish. I just wish they were in something other than D2...D2 is my least favorite higher-end steel. I would've much preffered s30v or cpm154.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I might get one for Christmas. Anyway, I like the idea of having a knife around the neck. As Paul TR stated, "They are very useful if you're wearing clothes without pockets or a belt loop." But, since this fellow isn't rich, I'm saving for a OTF MicroTech. I just wish there was more information on when more of them might release.
