Hi being a total beginner on knives, I've read some posts about people having a "neck knife" would that be a good choice for self-defense? Please post your views on having a neck knife and (if possible) you had any experiences using one.

The only neck knife I've seen so far is the one by smith n wesson (with a sheath that can be used as a whistle) would that be a good choice? if there's others, please post names and URL's if you have. Thanks a lot!

Best regards,

Chariot

Emerson La Griffe rocks, IMHO. Search for reviews on it and others, type "neck knife" as search subject. http://www.emersonknives.com/

Chariot,

I don't think anyone here will ever tell you to buy a S&W product. There are many custom knife makers that make neck knives and are quite inexpensive. There are also many online that sell neck knives. Top of my head is Running Dog. Michael Murphy is great and he is prompt at responding to your emails. So go check out their site. I have one coming to me soon. A reverse tanto of my design in Talonite.>

ancient: ok will go search for it, being a beginner i thought s&w was a good name, guess not since their products practically never are mentioned or recommended :-)

Hello & welcome- Neck knives have been, and in all likelihood will continue to be fairly popular items due largely to their utility. As far as being a "good" defensive carry- well, you will get as many opinions as you want. As for a good "entry level" neck knife- check www.newt.livesay.com good quality & good prices (if you don't want to take a $100.00 chance on something you're unsure about) BTW- the Running Dog knives are worth it. Good luck.

You've been given good advice by the previous forumites, but if you're looking for a good inexpensive neck knife to try to see if you'll like that mode of carry take a look at CRK&T stiff kiss. IT's available with three different blade styles plain or 1/2 serrated. The sheath comes with a pocket clip, removable belt loop and the cord for neck carry. This way if you don't like the neck carry you have other options. Set up for neck carry (without the clip or belt loop the whole package weights in at just 3ozs.

One reason S&W hasn't been mentioned is because they've gone over to the dark side by caving in to the antigunners and the Clintonistas.:mad

IMO) They are owened by a British company now and you know their views on gun and knives. I don't support them anymore and recomend same.

As already stated, there are plenty of good neck knives, both custom and production. CRKT makes a nice line of neck knives, and the prices are very low on them. Newt Livesay neck knives are not very pretty, but they are good stuff, and inexpensive. Ray Kirk http://www.tah-usa.net/raker/ turns out some nice customs at very nice prices. Also, check out Mike Cooper http://www.nebsnow.com/L6steel I dont know that he has any "standard" model neck knives, but I bet ya could talk him into working with you

He makes darn good stuff. Your choices are almost endless...hit all the forums here...this one, reviews, custom forum and so on...search neck knives and you will find more choices than you ever thought possible

thanks guys! the stiff kiss seems great for the price! and if i end up feeling comfortable wearing a knife around my neck, i might spend a little more and go for the "lil blue" by ray kirk - i really like the design on that one!

i love this place!!

The S&W neck-tanto is a very nice knife that is surprisingly well made. Actually better made than some customs. And with a price of $15-16 that´s a pretty good choice to start of with. The only drawback is that the blade has a chisel grind. You´ll also find a whistle in the sheath. Better buy one of those to see if you like the concept before buying a $$$ custom.

I recently bought a Stiff KISS, and have to say that it is very good value for the money. (wonder how many times you heard that statement about a CRKT knife??)

anyway, for self defense, it is quite good as a neck knife or clipped to a inside coat pocket.

BTW, does anybody know if polishing the blade will void the warrenty on the knife? just wondering cos i polished it to mirror finish and it looks really cool now

good luck in choosing a knife.

Chariot,
Check for CRKT Bear Claw - ultimate defensive tool, additionally hard to beat in competition quality/price.
Slightly customized it is very flat and easy to carry in concealment.

If you like more classic designs Fällkniven WM could serve you nicely.

i would recommend the Emerson La Griffe for a neck knife.
Hold it either with your index finger (index finger is the one closest to your thumb if i'm right! need to study more English...) stuck into the ring, or put the pinky in it, then it's blade down, i think that this blade has defense potential way beyond it's size.
Quick and very easy to hide, and x-tremely hard to lose!
I love mine!! 'nuff said.

Chariot,
Please follow the links in my previous post (underlined items) and you will get more info on CRKT Bear Claw. It handles greatly, when I grabbed it first time I felt like it would be my claw!

Jebe: I think some comes with a chord that breaks if too much pressure is put on it, I even saw one that was specially designed so no choking would be possible. But it's a valid questions you want it strong, so you won't lose it and yet you don't want to be choked :-)

The security details are very important and not all companies think of it.

ps. right now i'm considering the bearclaw, the fang from REKAT and la griffe!

Chariot
