Neck Knives... Toys from Scarface

So, this is an opinion I recently got from someone about neck knives...

I can't imagine wearing a HEAVY " necklace " all day. I don't see any benefit as a tool and it sure looks and smells like a toy. Every time you need this " tool " you have to reach up under your collar to get it out. If you have dirty hands , you'll get your shirt / neck dirty and if you use it for dirty jobs , you'll have to clean it well before putting it back under your shirt.

Sorry , I see no true value as any kind of a tool but it sure reminds me of some sort of weapon that you would see in the movies. " Scarface ?" I know of NOBODY who carries a knife around their neck.

I thought that was pretty weird, I replied and just mentioned they were popular amongst some people and mentioned the merits, I'll spare you guys the whole narrative, but basically I just avoided getting into a pissing match about it.

Anyway, I still have a need to mention it here though, just for kicks I suppose. First of all it was strange to me that he would talk about dirt and grime, as if a person wouldn't think to take it out of the shirt before starting work and washing the thing before putting it back--I do that with most of my pocket knives when I use them anyway, and if you didn't how is it any different from getting your pants dirty when going for a pocket knife?. However, the "Scarface" thing is what gets me... Did I miss part of Scarface or something? Where did he have a neck knife? Somehow Tony Montana doesn't seem as intimidating if I imagine him brandishing an Izula. :p

Made me think of neck knives though, they're still a pretty niche thing it seems. I kind of thought they were getting pretty popular and gaining more adopting as EDC knives. I don't know, anyone agree with this guy's sentiments?

I like them more than belt knives, and it's kind of a nice answer to a way to carry a fixed blade without having to clip it on your belt. Thing I like about that in particular is that having the sheath stuck on your belt kind of sucks when you're putting it back because you have to make sure it's going into the sheath so you don't cut yourself or something--just feels a little more natural having it on your neck and picking it up with the other hand to guide it on. I'm thinking about switching to pocket carrying for that reason too.

I never really liked neck knives. They just don't make any sense to me. But to each his own. Don't get the scarface reference either.

Maybe a reference to the jewlery around Tony Montana and that it would be a convenient way to conceal a weapon rather than a tool?

The thing I dont get is why people expend so much mental energy arguing on the 'net....

You guys don't remember the scene where he said "say hello to my little friend" and then pulled out a becker knecker?

I don't EDC a knife on my neck. Sometimes I carry a "Neck Knife" on my belt or in my pocket. It just is not my style to wear necklaces, and i think it would look a bit strange to take a knife out of my shirt infront of most non knife people. But to each his own, not my preference though. plus I thIbk its faster and easier to keep it on my belt or in my pocket.

im with slider^^ i like neck knives, just not on my neck lol

Me too. I love a pocketable fixed blade. The only time I wear a knife around my neck is when working outside in cold, winter weather when it is hard to reach my belt or pockets with gloves on and under my coat.

I view them as special purpose rather than routine carry. Example - I borrowed my mom's Izula (I don't have one) last time I went tubing down the river. It was perfect, for that application.

The condemning opinion seemed to be based on the assumption that it would be worn INSDE the shirt. That isn't always the case, some times they are worn OUTSIDE the shirt which makes them way more useful.

I have seen Scarface, several times, and I have trouble understanding the connection. Maybe he just meant it's gangsterish, weapon only, good only for coke dealers or other undesirables. Who knows.

I actually do not know anybody wearing a neck knife neither. They are probably not particularly practical.
That someone actually made a good point.
And I see some connection with Toni Montana case. Not that he wear any neck knives. But heavy necklaces of his and the car with zebra seats.... I do not mean that neck knives are the statement of bad taste. But some people may very well believe that - taste is very much a matter of personal opinion this days.

I've always found the whole concept of wearing a knife on one's neck a bit silly for a number of a reasons... to each their own though.

I never liked Scarface either ( and do not get the reference ) , Goodfellas beats it hands down :)

I have a Perrin La Griffe but keep it in a jacket pocket as opposed to neck wear.
+1 on Goodfellas. Pacino's phony Cuban accent turned me off from the git.

Until I started frequenting bladeforums I'd never even heard of neck knives. Now I edc an Izula neck carried and have no problems with any other neck knife as long as it's no heavier than an Izula and no thicker (no handle scales).

I'm not one to belt carry and just find neck carry a convenient way to carry a fixed blade as a back up to my pocket folder, no matter what clothes I'm wearing. It's also easier to deploy when I'm sitting down. I've explained the technique before but basically I run my thumb under both sides of the chain and pull the whole assembly out of my collar then down on the knife.
I almost never reach up under my shirt to deploy a neck knife.

I grew up wearing a no name cheap neck knife while fishing (not under shirt). Found it to be very handy for all the odds and ends you need to do on boat or land. Much the same for all the folks who neck carry a Becker or Izula while camping/hiking today.

Since I retired, and walk a lot in not the best areas, I've carried a concealed necker for several years now as a last ditch SD extra option. It's comfortable, but more importantly, a comfort.

I wear a neck knife. I wear it right in the center of my chest; it's comfortable, concealed, and easily accessible. Plus, I get to enjoy the free pocket space. I'm sure that you've seen these two clips on how versatile a neck knife can be. Although, I don't see how they can't be 'practical' since at the end of the day they're still a knife - which is an amazingly practical item.

I made a former co worker a small neck knife that he wears at work. Its a little bigger than a single edged razor and in it's sheath it hides behind his ID badge. Not too many people know he has it.

Sounds like some incoherent gibberish to me.

He sees no benefit of the tool? It's a knife - is a knife carried in the pocket or on the belt more beneficial than one you happen to carry on your neck? Preposterous. You can wear a neck knife outside your shirt and you can wash your hands - dirty shirt? What the heck? Scarface indeed - abnormal comment to make. I wear a knife around my neck, many here do as well.

Kick this guy in the butt tell him to stop acting like Harry and the Hendersons and start acting more like Godspell (hey - he can bring up an irrelevant movie - so can you). Weird!

I'm with the crowd who like neck knives but don't actually wear them around the neck. I guess I could say I like small fixed blades but those are often categorized as neck knives.

I don't see how anyone could claim such a blade is not useful.

I think when people said they were not useful, they meant that they didn't afford a significant advantage over carrying a knife in a belt sheeth or in the pocket.
