For the neck knife aficionados out there, I have a few questions:

1. Do you carry fixed blades, folders, or both?

2. What is the heaviest knife you will wear around your neck?

3. What are the advantages of neck carry?

4. What type of cord do you prefer?

5. Does your lanyard have an emergency release system?

Thanks a lot!

I like either my TOPS mini harpoon because of weight, or my IZULA because of it's versatility. Both are great neck knives, the IZULA being the heaviest.

Dont own one yet, but i plan on buying a brous blade silent soldier.
Dont know if ill carry on the neck or on my belt tough. Seems like a great all-around blade, for both detailed work and heavy (ab)use. It truly is a littly big knife!

1. Do you carry fixed blades, folders, or both?
Both/either, depending on the circumstances. Love both. But if I'm in a situation where I'm carrying a neck knife actually around my neck, then I'll only have a bigger fixed blade with me either on my belt or on my pack. A lot of times I'll use the standard neck knives like the Izula or Becker BK-11 as my primary fixed blade belt knife; they're such a perfect size and are so sturdy.

2. What is the heaviest knife you will wear around your neck?
Izula/Becker BK-11.

3. What are the advantages of neck carry?
Easier to access when crouched, sitting, climbing, or in a kayak. Arms don't bump it when swinging while walking. Doesn't dig into your ribs. Easier to shed when you want to jump into water. And a lot of times, I find myself holding whatever I'm working on up mid-chest, so the knife is closer to that location. I will say though that neck carry can be really annoying too.

4. What type of cord do you prefer?
Large diameter Arteplas PET cord with the inner strands removed and a piece of regular 550 paracord threaded through.

5. Does your lanyard have an emergency release system?
Not yet, but it will. I used to poopoo the idea, then was doing some rock scrambling and got my lanyard hooked on a tree branch, so that proved to me it can happen. I'll probably thread a ball chain through the paracord.

I only wear mine occasionally, but they're an easy, discrete way of carrying a knife. I use ball chain with (I think) a 20lb limit. Couldn't tell you anything about the weight. My favorite is this Benchmade:

As far as carrying a Neck Knife a CRKT Minimalist is the largest I go at 1.3 oz with sheath you won't feel the weight at all.

550 paracord to wear it, always worked well for me.

No emergency release system, I am accustomed to wearing a real necklace and it doesn't have one.

Advantages are ease of access from almost any position, lightweight, discreet carry, easier to carry everyday.

I carry several blades with me on a regular basis, I am a firm believer in a carrying a main blade that is fixed, and at least one secondary blade like a folder or necker. I choose to carry 3-4 knives on the norm though, generally I carry a Tops Fieldcraft of Tops Firestike 45 (yeah big knives, but it helps to balance out the weight on my hips due to my CCW on the other side), my Victorinox Huntsman, Leatherman Sidekick, and an Outdoor Edge Mini Blaze on my keychain survival kit. The Mini Blaze has pretty much eliminated me from carrying a neck knife for the most part as I have leaned towards it for the last several months.

Thanks for your replies, everyone.

I have a Victorinox Bantam and a Buck 444 that I'm thinking about wearing around my neck, just for fun. They both are a hair over 1 oz.

I used to wear my wallet around my neck for years, until it started to give me a pain in the neck. I just carried ID and a couple of cards, so it weighed around 1oz. It was so great not having to worry about being pickpocketed. For one thing, wearing the knife around the neck would not print your pocket, and you never lose something that is around your neck.

Here is a vid I made about a breakaway knot if you're interested:
