Neck Knives?

When I decided to make neck knives I took into consideration the reasons folks carry them. Besides it being sharp, easy to access, and lightweight, I figured it had to be as thin as possible to make it more concealable. Thats why I went with no scales on them. Would most of you prefer a neck knife with scales or even cord wrapped??

Hi!

I use my Emerson La Griffe and for me it's the best in concealability vs. retention.
I "Strider-wrapped" mine, works A-OK! Look! and here and here

So i'd say that i prefer cordwrapped! light and minimalistic.

Like it!

Hi
i dont like any knife without scales.
Wrapping is ok, i like to use leather stripes.
For my fingers pure steel does not have the right feeling as a handle.

Mike,

I prefer them with thin scales.

Enhances grip, and if done properly, doesn't print much more than without.

I have a number of neck knives and I prefer the comfort of micarta handles. I have handled a number of knives of the same pattern with, without, and cord-wrapped handles. The extra weight and width of the handles are worthwhile in a knife that is a user, especially if you think you might need it in an emergency.
I have a variety of Newt Livesay's neck knives and he is a past master of making knives with comfortable handles. You might take a look at some of his knives for examples.Especially the Executive Woo.

Any chance that you will make some drop point nech knives in your next batch, L6? I would have grabbed two, if they were drop point.

I'll have to go with thin Micarta/wood/G-10 scales as 1st preference for a neck knife- adds almost nothing to weight/bulk but adds tons to comfort & grip in use. I have cord-wrapped all of the neck knives that came to me "naked" & like & carry them as well.

Ok, seems scales are preferred. Now heres the real question, are you folks willing to pay an extra $30 for a neck knife with scales???
Sheng, I will be making some drop point neck knives in the next batch. Is 3/4" wide enough or would you prefer something a little bigger?

This is the Michael (L6) Cooper Neck Knife that came in today's mail. 6" OAL, a cutting edge of 2 3/8" with blue g-10 (what else?) scales. Tang marked "Cooper" on one side, and "Bluesman" on the other.

Mike, thank you my friend!!!

Those scales look great Blues. Mike, I dont usually care much for scales on a necker. I have found that they add just enough to the butt-end of the handle to poke out with some shirts. I never thought of ones like you did on Blues....I think that would take care of the problem, and looks nice as well.

Before I do another one with inset handles like that one I gotta find out how the pros do it. It stands out like a sore thumb when you don't get the scales exactly like the tang of the knife.

Bigbore.45: I purchased Bradburn NK 2 last month. It´s great, my every day carry nowadays.

L6, if I were in your position, I would market the blades as "naked", but have scales available with screw assemblies for attaching them rather than pins. That way people have the option of what scales they want, as well as the ability to switch them when they want. Just a thought. For a true neck knife, my preference is for a bare knife to keep it as light as possible. With scales I would probably just make a litttle aftermarket Concealex belt sheath that would ride right along my belt. That's my pref, though. I hate heavy stuff around my neck. The La Griffe is about as heavy as I like to have these days.

Michael, I agree with Chiro75. I absolutely love my L6 Wharncliffe necker as is. It is by far the the most comfortable necker I have and additional weight would be counterproductive. But it would also make a nice little belt knife and if I was beltin' it I think scales would give it a better, more comfortable grip for extended use.
