What can\do you use your Izula,Eskobar ,etc for, that you can't or is difficult
to do with a good folder?

It's just a peace of mind thing to me, personally, though it has technically came in handy once.

The thing about a folder is that unless it's insanely overbuilt and just doesn't even move even when flexing in my hand, I don't feel as safe if I ever need to use it in a high-stress situation. Some folders that are very high quality knives for EDC, I feel like I could snap in half at the pivot just between my hands just by how much they flex when just using my fingers to "feel" how rigid it is.

For the most part I don't really see much practical reason for needing the knife that strong. If you need to pry things, or dig holes it's great; you should have brought a prybar and a shovel though.

Came in handy last winter though, I ran out of gas on the way home. Between the mechanism and the solid ice gasket that was on the gas hatch I couldn't get it to open with just my keys and a tire iron, so I had to choose which knife between my Kulgera and my Izula, to chip out enough ice to pry the latch back enough to pop the hatch. I went with the Izula because it cost $50, and if I was really broke or something it has a no question asked warranty too, and the Kulgera sometimes feels like one of those knives I could snap between my hands.

So since then I've usually kept my Izula on me as just kind of a "just in case" kind of thing when I'm driving somewhere or just much outside my normal routine, bad weather, etc.

anything involving lateral stress or cutting up into - like pallet banding (plastic or nylon, not steel) - where the spine of the knife is an anchor point and you're pulling up through the material. if the lock on a folder fails, you have a nasty cut/trip to the ER.

It's nice if your pockets are full or you're wearing clothes without pockets. Also the Becker Necker can open bottles, which almost all folders can't.

I agree with KennyB, in some stress situations it could be difficult to open the knife or something like that.
And a fixed blade is (!) a fixed blade. Without any opening, locking mechanism it´s always ready for use.

I've used the Izula digging for worms while fishing. Cutting burlap off a tree rootball when planting which I've done many times with folders but I now prefer to spare them the dirtiest work.

I can yank it off it's chain/out of my sleeve and cut a bear's throat open without having to open it. Works for me, but not everyone is routinely attacked by chainsaw-wielding bears.

Honestly? I have yet to find something that my Izula can do that I couldn't have done with any of my folders. I'm sure I could pry or baton like crazy with it but since I rarely do the former and never do the latter anyway, it doesn't make any difference to me.

I agree. One time my pockets were so full of gold dust I couldn't fit a fart in any of them. Then there was the time I was lead ballerino and my costume didn't have pockets. Both times a neck knife worked.

As for opening bottles modern science has solved that problem - twist offs or other methods have worked fine for me.

For one thing I can wear it on my neck. I can baton my BK11 through kindling wood and so forth. It's also nice for cleaning larger game (like deer) and is a heck of a lot easier to clean up.

Can do all that stuff with a folder, I suppose but the BK11 does it better.

Part two shows a lot of heavy duty tasks that you can't do with a folder, but part one has some great points as well.

I use my Izula for dirty work that would normally gum up my folder. I prefer it with no handle wrap for cleaning simplicity.
Here is a plug for Hoopster's sheath for the Izula. A super nice kydex sheath, Thanks Hoopster:cool:

I EDC an Izula II in my front pocket, mainly because it is easier to clean and maintain than a folder.

The only knife I neck carry is my Murray Carter neck knife. It's very lightweight, small, and slim. He makes awesome blades. Pride of ownership alone is enough for me to carry it, but it really shines right now while I'm wearing shorts with no pockets. I plan to buy a second one soon.

I also have a couple Folts minimalist's in the standard wharncliffe blade, which is also a great neck option. I've seen the CRKT production version go for $12-$15. Might be an option for anyone wanting to try a neck knife, but is shocked at the price of the Carters!

Thanks for the feedback,Eskabar ordered. If I like the idea I may have
to get one of the higher end models .

I carry my Izula at work cuz I am welder and grinding alot the grinding dust gets in my folders pivot and locking mechanism and once the metal shavings got in the lock and the lock would not lock up. all it took was a blow gun to blow it clean but if I forget to clean it and try to use it I could get hurt. also the gutting of animals and cleaning up is enough for me. used a folder once and will never do that again, lol
