Neck purse/wallet?

Hi guys.

I'm planning to take a trip next summer to a country that might not always be so safe for vanilla face such as myself, beard or no beard. I've been thinking of very discreet purse where I could carry some amount of cash and passport (plan would be to carry "fake wallet" in my pocket with some cash aswell). Problem is, that I don't want it to be too thick, especially around neck (cord).

It's hot climate, so I need something that wouldn't print the neck cord to t-shirt either. Maybe one option would be to have one made, unless there isn't any mass produced options. I know maxpedition has something like that, so any experience on those?
Or what about something completely different?

Thanks for any possible ideas!

Conventional wisdom is that you NEVER put a noose around your neck.

My wife formerly traveled the world as a medical-missionary RN. Started out at my insistence with a nylon neck passport/wallet holder..however quickly went to a small purse with shoulder strap..after transitioning through a fanny pack. The ability to quickly access needed stuff more important to her than security of passport/money. She never took much money and always brought most of it home. Of course, traveling in a group 6-15 doctors, nurses and lay people didn't hurt.

A prisoner in Sudan wanted to buy her as his wife but only offered 1 cow however she held out for 15 cows...remains my wife.

What countries are you thinking about? It depends on the country/area that you'll be visiting.

In urbanized areas (including the USA), robbers will probably make you hand over your wallet/valuables and then run. If you're in a third-world country, robbers may make you strip down since everyone travels with valuables hidden on the body. In a war-zone, they'll shoot you and then rob your body at their leisure.

If you can, lock-up your valuables in the hotel safe/room safe and only carry enough for your day's expenses. In certain countries, I have only carried photocopies of my passport and other documents while the real one sat in the safe.

Personally, I've owned and tried several neck wallets and have hated them all. They're bulky and uncomfortable and obvious and I found myself patting it all the time -good way for you to telegraph your valuables to watching thieves. Look for pants with multiple pockets with zippers and velcro flaps. Separate your cash into valuables pocket and a "beer money" pocket in case of pickpockets. I have also used a zippered belt, but that was just to hold some taxi money if I ever did get robbed.

IMO it's not a good idea to put anything around your neck in any sort of a violent country, not even a dogtag chain if you can help it (laced in boot is better option for civilians IMO), and a travel backpack that's lockable, slashproof, and low key is the ticket.
If you must have a neck wallet though, the Spec- Ops THE wallet jr. on a dogtag chain is what I would use.

I would not carry a thick neck wallet. Go to www.raineinc.com Click on ID cases, wallets, badge holders. Go to the zippered neck ID holder. This is the thinnest easy to wear neck wallet I have seen. It should be worn under a shirt with a collar. The best shirt would be a travel shirt with a zippered pocket under the patch button pocket for your passport. This neck wallet has a plastic front that allows the shirt material to slide across the wallet. Do not wear a neck wallet under a t shirt. It is too easily seen and shouts tourist. Raine Inc. also has a wonderful leg pouch to spread your money around.

Or you could try the old money belt routine. Just go to the bathroom and dole out cash into your pocket when you need it.
