neck/ underarm carry

I have been carrying a nemesis arch-ally for a little over a month now. Its a great knife. but i was wondering about the laws regarding this. I live in maryland but i am curently spending a few months in virginia before i ship out to iraq (im joining the army and assume that is where ill go). the knife came with a chain to wear around the neck. I took a peice of paracord and made it so that i could use it for underarm carry( as it is less obtrusive). So myquestion is wether or not it is legal to carry a neck knife in thesse to area's and if changeing the carry method changes the laws. If my current method does violate some law (though i cant imagine why) what do you guys recomend ?
