Hey Everybody.......

The Necker that sits on the mantle and splits small kindling, fatwood(mostly) and the occasional fuzz stick was showing the need for a little love after about one and a half heating seasons......

You can see the not so hot fuzzies above

A quick hit with the Norton and we get an edge that gets us some GOOD fuzzies

This Necker probably sees an average of 8 to 10 hits almost every morning 6 months out of the year.......It was still making ok fuzzies .....

Not bad I think....What say you......

All Best.....

My most used and most carried knife. Makes a great pearing knife as well as a good steak knife. Its a great knife for bushcraft as well.:thumbup::thumbup: (If I had three hands that is) I've stripped mine and polished it so there's less resistance. I will post pictures up later :)

Okay.....just ordered one these too. That makes 9,7,2 2's, and an 11.

this is ridiculous

That first attempt at fuzzy's was still pretty good considering that the blade hadn't seen a stone in over a year!

What a great little blade...

Is the handle the only difference from the eskabar?

Pretty much. I don't own an eskabar but from what I've read people like the ergos on it much better than the 11. I personally don't mind because I have relatively small hands and the 11 fits well with a nice 550 wrap. But maybe I just have to order an eskabar to see if there is a difference :D ;)

this is reminding me that i should look into a sharpening system again, or two...

i have sticks, stones, spyderco both; glass, mouse pads and sandpaper, and even a strop with compounds; even those danged higher end kitchen knife sharpeners (keep getting free ones)...

need a belt machine! need something like an edge-pro maybe... yar.

Did you buy the strops? if so where? If you didn't did you make them? I've just got some DMT diamond stones but got a serious sharp edge from a professional sharpener but I'd rather like to learn how to maintain edges instead of paying for someone to sharpen them for me.

Strops are easily made just need wood, a knife.....becker preferably, and a old belt....some stropping compound and glue

Ethan, you mke me feel like a woose! Starig daily fires with a fuzz stick.. I cheat and use the store bought fire starters, though they are fatwood. You are truly the man! I may have to retire my man card to hang with all you guys here......

Naw, I'm like Ethan, he has a fireplace, I have a woodburning stove. During the winter, I will start at least one fire a day, most days, and its a good way to stay in practice. But, I use only hardwood in my stove, no store bought stuff, so I have to practice firecraft often. Fuzzy's are a good way to get a fire going. So is a Bernz-o-matic.

I use the "worksharp knife and tool sharpener"(WSKTS), gets a nice little convex edge going.
And here's a good post on the forums http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=765050&highlight=wskts

From the title, I thought this was going to be a restoration / refinish type of thread.

There's some nice daily use / wear and tear on that knife. Interesting to see you just uses a Norton stone - no exotic / unobtanium sharpening system.

Pretty substantial bowie sitting on the table behind you too...

is that an esee in the background in the 3rd pic, to the right of the bowie?

No, it most certainly is not. How dare you insinuate such a thing.

Besides, I told him to put it up before we started.:D

Hey Everybody.....

I got the everyday "one match" fire idea from Jim Nowka.......I remember thinking at the time that he had waaay too much time on his hands but, the idea kept eating away at me....We ALL talk about not enough dirt time.....Well this is maybe clean dirt time ????....Reading a bolt of wood is----reading a bolt of wood.......Wether it is large or small ya gotta read the rings....Sooo I found that using the Nowka routine, after a week or two, takes very little time, builds competency and is fun, after all I get to use my knives, and don't have to smell hydrocarbon fumes or burning newspaper first thing in the morning.....It is a win all around....You will be amazed at how quick your fire skills will improve !!!!.....

If I am in the shop waiting for something to dry, I will frequently carve a joint or just make a tent peg ---- whatever strikes me....they go in the burn barrel or the kindling bucket but, it is more "clean" dirt time....I keep a pile of "sticks" from finger size up to a little bigger than wrist size of various species ........

It is helpful when you are kneeling in gravel and freezing your ass off to have all the motor skills and etc. down pat.....

All Best....

The Bowie is an old Western pattern of which I am very fond of and YES that is an ESSE 3......A very handy little blade....Mike and Jeff are getting veeery close to doing a decent job........LOL.....Seriously, that is a very decent tool.........

All Best....

OOPS....the Norton thing....The last thing a knife from Randall Made Knives, Jerry Fisk and a lot of other custom guys is a Norton "fine India"....Gives a great aggressive edge....A few squirts of WD40 to clean the fines out and you are good to go again....Have used it as a waterstone in the kichen---it works....Also they have the drawback of being readily available and quite cheap.....

All Best....
