Anybody know who could do this for anything close to reasonable? I've got 30 feet maybe of L-6 bandsaw blade so it's not too hard... yet! Its my "kitchen knife" stash of steel but I'm tired of cutting it up by hand not to mention it uses up bandsaw blades pretty quick and cutting it with a torch compromises steel so I gotta grind off a 1/4 in. or so to get to what I can call usable steel. I need it cut into two inch wide strips the width of this old blade, which is, by the way, about 10 inches. Anyone know who down my way could do this??

hey bud........call sign fabricating shops. We had 2 HUGH shears that could cut up to 1/4 mild steel...............surley they could do it cheap......

A steel supplier will have shears but don't know the price. The local one here has a 3/4" capacity shear.

There's always plasma. It cuts a pretty clean line if you use a fence or bar of steel for the torch to follow, plus about a 1/16th" kerf or so. I don't have a clue though as to whether or not it messes the steel up much.

It is also possible to cut it with a chisel and a vise, I have cut several steel strips that way pretty quickly

I've got some old gang saw blades that I use to add to damascus and the way I saw them is to dig a hole in the ground, burn wood scraps till I got a bed of coals and leave the saw in the fire till it turns a nice bright blue. There soft enough for me to saw then without going through a dozen bandsaw blades.

A plasma cutter will do the same thing as a torch, but not as much mess. If it is L-6 it's slightly air harding and a plasma cutter will leave a thin skin at the cut that will kill files and band saw blades.

Mitch,
Give Texas Knifemakers Supply a call and talke to Lance or Jim. They have had steel sheared locally before.

If none of the other stuff pans out, see if there are any schools nearby with metal working classes. They have 2 shears for the CSM department at OSU where I'm taking classes. If you catch the right person in the right mood they might help you out
