I checked McMaster, MSCDirect and some others. Only shim stock ...
Need not much, may be 12-24" long to try.

Also who knows the composition of rebar steel? I found pretty different data about it:confused:

Can't help you on the 1095.
As fasr as rebar goes, the composition depends on the grade of rebar you're dealing with. There is a new high strength (can't remember the designation) grade that is suitable for some stuff. Maybe not knives so much as hawks, cold chisels, punches etc. but it will harden fairly well.
The lower grades don't have enough carbon to really make good cutting tools

Would W1 be OK? As I understand it it's composition isn't far off from 1095 and you may be able to find what you need as a cutoff from a local machine shop or something. I just checked and McMaster and they do have W1 in 1-1/2" diameter.

Look for W1 drill rod, W1 is basicly just a better grade of 1095 and easier to find.

PS. Sorry Deker, was writing this when you posted. Great minds think alike :D

I am confused again.Due to the MatWeb data the amount of carbon in W1 steel could be from 0.6 to 1.4%.
How I suppose to determine what I've got????? And how I suppose to harden it? It is more than two folds difference in carbon percentage!

In 1095 I at least know I'll get 0.9-1% of carbon. It is guaranteed. And W1 supposed to be "improved version of 1095"?:barf:
May be I miss something?

You are confused :) W1 can be ordered with different amounts of carbon from the mill. Drill rod will have very close to 1%. Ask for the specs for the W1 you are looking to buy.

W1 is a better grade of steel than 1095.

or you could go hog wild and buy some of the bigazz W2 round bar that Don is selling. Then you would have W2, which is a better version of W1 which is a better version of 1095......you get the point:D

The W1 I got from Enco is .84% C It was 1-1/4" drill rod. The one knife I've made from it so far had a pretty good hamon. :)

Great Hamon Phillip. Actually W1 with .84 carbon will produce a very active hamon. I was unaware of this and the lower carbon may account for Enco having the lowest price on W1 drill rod.

Rebar will vary in carbon content but got to admit I used quite a bit of it for making knives when I first started learning how to forge. All that I used would harden in oil with no problem and back then all I used was drain oil. I did only use 60 grade rebar. Never did get any anilized but do believe all that I used was at least .5 carbon although the speck sheets that came with some of it said .35. Here's one that I made in 96: http://www.bladegallery.com/shopexd.asp?id=2750&websess=70883436868809

That is a great looking fighter Ray ! I really appreciate when someone can forge out a blade like that and preserve the original look of the rebar at the same time.
If you can find the rebar with the flat sides instead of the horizontal rib,the carbon content is higher. It is a specialized rebar so its not too easy to find.

Good point. I'll have to try MSC sometime. Of course, now that I've got some of your W2, what's the point? :D I just need to get a lot more of it...
