Do I need to get the 12" x 5" pieces and cut my own? I figured someone has been in this delima before. Will the cut of the material alter the pattern? I would think not but thought I'd ask.
Thanks in advance.....

Looks like your up to making some larger knives ,keep it up you do good work.
We buy our micarta in sheets and then cut the handles to the size we need.
You can buy just scales ,but i've never seen them that large. The sheets come 5 by 12,10 by 12,and 15 by 12 , and it does'nt matter how you cut them the pattern stays the same. sheffield knifemakers supply has a good choice of colors and thickness.
hope this helps

Because I use so much materials, I always buy in bulk. All Micarta and G10 I buy is in 12x5 plates / sheets. and sometimes I get 24x12inch sheets of a similar canvas / linen phenolic which is available locally.

Yes, sometimes the weave can run in unique directions which will affect the finished product looks.

You should be able to see the direction of the weave on the surface, try to keep pieces cut facing the same axis (ie.- lengthwise or crosswise). Also, you might find that different plates marked the same may actually have totally different weave components in it. It could have come from different batches and have slightly differing stacked weave arrangements / density / colour etc. So I always cut matched handle slabs from the same sheet.

Also, the larger sheets are cheaper for the bulk, although I end up paying airfreight anyhow ... :grumpy:

Hope this helps. Jason.

Just a note about the phenolic from Shefield - it's not Westinghouse and the last few pieces I've gotten from them had uneven color through the sheet. I didn't expect this to be as noticeable as it is, but it sucks. I'm just going to have to use about $50 worth of "Micarta" for tools or something, cause it's not good enough for knives.

The sad part about this is, no one else seems to carry the variety in the large pieces that Shefield's does. So be prepared to look them over carefully before you accept them. Just my 2c.

Thanks guys......I'll get the bigger sheets, and thanks for the nice comments on my work. :D
