I just picked up a vintage 8ot off of ebay ($15.50 - a steal of a deal if I do say so myself). The knife is unused and in perfect condition but does not have a box. I'd prefer a box that matches the vintage of the knife.

Front side of tang has:
Schrade
Walden
N.Y. U.S.A

Back side of tang has:
8OT

The nail nick on the clip blade is the "matchstrike" style instead of the straight smooth style that was produced later. Also, the back side of the clip has a contoured/beveled edge that starts about 3/4" from the hinge and runs to the point. The blades appear more polished than the standard 1095 steel, so I'm wondering if they are stainless.

Given that the 8OT was produced between 1959-2004, and the tang markings are in the years of 1946-1974, it seems logical that this knife was produced between 1959-1974.

I don't know what a box of this vintage would look like, but I'm guessing it would be light and dark brown with the red schrade stripe?

If anybody has a box that would match this vintage knife, please email ted@thegamblefamily.net

Thanks.

I'm kinda thinking it would have been in the old Schrade-Walden boxes, brown woodgrain? Nevertheless, I don't have one, but you are top of the list if one comes my way. Or, were these in the early years in the 'tube' clear plastic boxes (I love finding old S-Ws still in those).

Phil,

I got an email from LT stating that they came bulk packed in the small clear tubes. I guess I won't likely be finding one of those.

It'll be difficult, but not impossible. Much of the enjoyment of knife collecting for me is finding such things. I'll continue to keep an eye out, Ted.

Here are a few in the tubes I've picked up the last couple of weeks. One of them came to me, as I'm known locally as a collector and part time- small time- dealer.

Enjoy the challenge of the search, Ted.

A little more research has shown that not only did they come in the tubes but then later on hinged wood boxes and then early 70 tys the wood grain cardboard. Yes all still under Schrade Walden. So actually you would be correct with any of them. Here are some pics so that you know what to look for. LT

If anyone has either a tube or one of the cardboard boxes for an 8OT (that you might be willing to part with), I'd love to hear from you.

There are some of the boxes you are looking for on the bay right now. You might want to take a look. Frankly the money seems nuts to me but you can look I suppose. I have some of those cardboard ones around and someday I will fall over them bt for now they are in the land of the lost. Sorry LT. If I ever find one it would be on the house. LT

You got it if I find it don't hold your breath chances are it will have to fall on my head to find it. Did you ever notice if you are out in a garage ( or similar) and something falls on your head if it is interesting and you have been looking for it . Then it seems to take your mind off the pain from it falling on you. That is why only interesting stuff should be stored up high. LT
