I need to get myself a tomahawk or hatchet or suchlike for cutting kindling from larger blocks of spilt wood for the fireplace at home.

Now, I could go down to the local rural supply place and pick up something off the shelf but I thought it might be nice to have something custom made perhaps, that I like the look of and will work well for me.

This will be a hard working tool and not a safe queen so which makers would you recommend I look at for some good examples.

Thanks.

Call me crazy...But I believe that the Gransfors Bruks line of axes are some of the most pleasing working axes around to look at, and use. They have many versions and they will send you a very informative/interesting booklet called "The Axe Book" it will also include a list of dealers and phone#'s.

Give them a look www.gransfors.com

I use a Fort Turner hammer hawk for hatchet type work. They hone to a wicked edge with very little work. They split small stuff very well and even fell small trees fairly easily. I use the hammer end to pound in tent stakes and our dog tether, plus the extra weight from the hammer poll gives you more oomph for all tasks. They are hand hammered and look very rustic. I'm not a big fan of the production hawks with their smooth finishes. I want mine to look like someone put sweat into the process, which he does. Dana is great and his shipping is always fast. He uses hickory handles that have a nice taper for throwing, but yet are big enough to really get a grip when you need it. I think they are about $50 with shipping. The ATC and others are nice as well, but for $50 this one is a great deal.
