Need a "boar" knife

Some of my co-workers go boar hunting in GA and TN. They started with firearms, then bows, last year it was spears (Cold Steel and customs) This year the weapon of choice among the brave and foolish is a knife, now that got my interest (and I am prone to stupid acts with sharp objects.)
So I now have an excuse to get a new knife.
I understand that Lightfoot has designed a blade for this type of hunting and I imagine that his Sierra would do great as well (I heard it was designed by a pretty swell fellow)
I am also considering a MD ATAK, which looks pretty ideal for this swine slaying (I hear they are excellent squid slayers as well.)
The Rinaldi Aramagedon looks very sweet, but the big brown truck of joy should be bringing mine this week, with a Chimera attached

I'll probably bring a Livesay or three with me as well as a Busse #9 for the camp chores. This could be cool, I just heard rumors about this years hunt but I've seen pictures of the past few and it looks pretty wicked.
Any suggestions? Anyone been on this sort of hunt before that could share their experince with us?
Take care,
Chad

I think a Large, double edged blade would be ideal.

Something like a Cold steel Taipan or large
peacekeeper. Larry Harley's Battle Bowie was designed with feedback from boar hunters(Larry is a part-time pig guide).

Grip security is paramount, double edge or sharpened clip is important too.
An Ontario bagwell would probably do the trick also.

Will Fennell over at the Camillus Forum has a lot of experience killing piggies.
you may want to ask him.

Larry Harley has done more pig stickin' than anyone I could ever think of, and makes some seriously big honkin' knives for doing so. Look him up. He's got a knife in this month's Blade (I think - maybe KI), so his number is there.

Chad, a Randall model 14 would do the job.

Chad,

This sounds pretty crazy. I have heard of people hunting boar with a throwing knife; but, actually trying to do the job with a short blade sounds like a good way to get seriously hurt.

A friend of mine once tried to finish off a wounded (near dead) deer with a hunting knife. The thing got up and kicked the @@@@ out of him. Its not easy, and its much harder with a boar (they have tusks, are aggressive, and weigh twice as much as a deer).

During the 19th century sportsman would sometimes hunt boar with a boar sword. This was a long two-handed afair with pronounced steel blade extensions (about two feet back from the point) to keep the animal from climbing up the blade after you've impaled it.

Just make sure your insurance is up to date.

"Wild boar hunts were very popular in the later Middle Ages - to kill a boar on foot was reckoned a supreme test of courage and skill. A special form of blade was developed for the purpose, based on the long triangular tuck. The hilt was of the usual crosshilted hand-and-a-half type but the long narrow blade suddenly widened and thickened near the point and was often slotted near the flair to take a short bar. This was designed to keep a safe distance between the huntsman and the scything tusks of the transfixed quarry."

SWORD AND HILT WEAPONS (Weidenfield and Nicolson, New York, 1989) pp. 101

Well, from the articles that I've read on the subject it seems pretty easy and not all that risky to finish off the boar since dogs are used on the hunt. The poor boar has to worry about fighting off three dogs at the same time as you and your pig-sticker. Not particularly fair if you ask me. Now one-on-one with a boar using the aforementioned "boar sword" on the other hand...

Howdy There Chad234...!
Just saw your post about the "boar hunting knife" got a fellow down here that has been making them type of knives for some "nuts", I mean fellows up in Tenn. for just that use. They are made of 3/16" 440C with stag handles, with a long slime bowie type blade. They most be pretty good cause thay have started a fellowing for them. Give him a call, his phone number is 864-225-5970 and his name is Marvin Poole. Good luck with the hunting, course I would rather use a 44 mag. than a blade. Later......!

Here's one of the two boar that I harvested about a year and a half ago:

I thought the plan was to use a handgun to dispatch the hog. However, it was not possible to get a clear shot with the dogs on the hog. It was then that I learned that the plan was to use a knife. After running 2 miles or so through the woods chasing the hog and dogs, I was a bit keyed up and don't remember exactly what kind of knife it was, but it was a long bladed Bowie that I borrowed for the task. I later picked up an Ontario SP-6 fighter in case I get crazy enough to try hunting hogs again.

The idea is to sneak up behind them and stab towards the heart from just behind the front shoulder. You want a fighter bowie style or maybe a dagger with a blade length of at least 8 inches. More than 8 inches is preferable in case you're up against a really large hog. A 700 lb. hog was harvested in the same area I got mine a few months later.

If you're not hunting with dogs, I highly recommend a 4" S&W Model 629 over any damned Bowie knife

Rgray: great looking pup, I think the American Bulldog is a great breed. Being a dog lover (and cursed with an overdose of curiousity) I've been doing a little research (like a good little investigator) the MO of the hunt centers around the dogs, in this case Georgia Bluebloods (a family of the American Bulldogs actually) although often times mixed breeds (with mostly AB bloodlines) and APBT are used, there is even doggie body armor to help protect them from the tusks. The boars, however, are not permitted to wear body armor.
I am not much of a hunter (I am a great camp cook though) but for some reason this hunt appeals to me on a primal level.
Take care,
Chad

Shrike,
You can rest assured that I'll have a few of Newt's wicked knives along for the ride. Hey, an HKR may just be the perfect knife for the job......
A big thank you to all that replied. That Randall #14 looks awesome, what are the difference between that and the blackjack?
thanks again,
Chad

Sounds to me like a job for a Hell's Belle and I just saw a good deal on one in the for Sale Forum.

About 15 years ago, I worked for a company that produced a catalog of 'executive toys,' kind of like Sharper Image. Being a redneck, I invited a rep from Al-Mar knives to show us his wares. At that time, they had a knife designed and dedicated to boar hunting; in fact, the sales rep, a former freakazoid mercenary, had just used it on a hunt--dropping out of trees onto pigs, sounds like fun. Try one of their old catalogs.--OKG

Chad,
Let me give you a little advice!! Once you cross the Mason/Dixon line, they are NO LONGER called Boars!! They are called HAWGS!!! Here in Florida they are hunted with Hawg Dawgs!! (Pit Bulls)
Comming from NY, I was told that I sounded like a Damn tourist calling them Boars!!
As far as a knife, I use my standard Small Hunter to field dress them. I don't go NEAR them untill they are GOOD AND DEAD
smile.gif

I would recommend the BIG knife or handgun to dispatch the Dawgs that field stitches or a trip to the vet will not help. Last year, Hawg Hunting cost one of my co-workers 2 Dawgs for one Hawg!! Usually the ratio is not nearly that bad

Happy Hawg Hunting!

A Cold Steel Trail Master Bowie would be MY choice.
Nothing less than that razor-sharp, 5/16 THICK, 9&1/2 inch LONG blade will do, when MY hide is on the line with one of them mean ol' hoggs!.

.

The wide hand-guard, and Krayton (rubber) handle, would also be welcome, as it might take a pretty hard stab to go deep enough in for a "quick-kill" on a tough hogg.

Hi:

Used a L. Harley BattleBowie to nab a 250lb black boar -best "pig sticker" out there. He uses a butcher grind.

you want to hunt with a knife????!!!!!!!!!

ok, then if you dont want a claymore, use a gladius or a celtic short sword

i'm thinking anything less than a arkansas toothpick or a large (18 in) bowie is asking for trouble. and for goodness sake take a back up of your favorite large caliber hand gun. personally i think 10 ft poles are close enough.

I think hunting a goddamn 700 lbs boar with a knife is nothing short
of insane. Do yourself and the boar a favor and get a short-barreled
hunting rifle in some socially relevant calibre. Anybody making .454
Casull rifles?
