Hey fellas new here and this is my first post. I am not a big time knife guy, got a small collection nothing fancy just some sogs, smiths, bucks and a few others. But I am looking for some help with my christmas present. I am looking for a large fixed blade for camping. Basically somthing I can beat on and is gonna keep running. Splitting wood, cutting heavy cord etc. Also I am wanting to keep it under 100 bucks if I can. Any help would be awsome. Thanks guys

Well, go to JK Handmade Knives. John (stomper) is a forum member here and has his own forum here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=830 . You can go to his website at www.jkhandmadeknives.com . He's making me a custom fixed blade that i designed for 130$, hes a great guy to deal with, call em or email em. I'm sure he'll help you within your price range! You can choose wood, micarta, g10. The g10 is more expensive because it eats up his belts but for the handle materials you cant lose! Comes with a handmade sheath out of kydex or leather also. Get in contact with em! Can't get any better than a knife that you choose everything on. Size, materials. He uses 1095 or 01, can't beat that! Does everything himself from heat treat to putting it together.

For a large stainless camp knife, the Buck 119 would work.

For a non-stainless camp knife, look at the Ka-Bar Becker BK11 or a Ka-Bar Marine knife.

Any of those is no more than $65.

I have looked at the becker line and actually have them written down on my list. I am torn between the 9 and seven. My only concern with the nine is with the length being what it is, would it affect the ruggedness of the blade?

I would suggest one of our custom malers as well. JK makes some good ones as does Breeden, Koyote and DPK. I can speak for these because I have knives from them. If you go production with what you want to spend, no doubt the Beckers are top notch and priced well. I have a BK-7.

I am getting a camp knife from a maker, myself--he just finished the blade this morning and just needs to mount it up with blued steel fittings and a curly maple handle. I would have to say that custom makers are going to be your best bet to get what you want, and know that your money was well spent. If you go production, my Ka-Bar does a damn good job, but its stacked-leather handle finally fell apart so this custom camp knife is replacing it.

I would love to go with a custom but I am doubtful I can get what I am looking for for the price range I have. I will give some guys some chances and get some prices.

for under a 100$, i like the ontario sp5 and sp8. The 5 is full flat 10" survival bowie its the better slicer of the two if food prep is requirment. The sp8 is ax like scandi ground 10" heavy military breach tool /survival blade with some reprofiling can be nicely convexed and is one hell of a hrdwoods chopper. Both are in 1095 tool steel. Both could be had for a little over a hundred.

Take a look at The RAT Cutlery RC-4 ... it's a great camp knife with an awesome warranty

The length does not affect the ruggedness of the blade. It's a beast!

I have bought a couple of SOG seal pups for the kids. I bought a field pup for the wife (more comfortable grip).

I would recommend them in the budget you have set.
