I need a new knife to use for outdoors and hiking and camping. My last choice was the esee junglas, but i fear it may be too big. Are there any other knives out there smaller than the esee junglas with a blade of around 7-8 inches that i can rely on for outdoors use? Preferably id like to keep the price under $150.00.

Scrapyard Regulator.

I came up on one and I love this knife, not too big or too small, can carry it all day and it takes a good edge.

Ontario (spec plus or something in the Ranger line) & KaBar (BK7) come to mind first.

You really want a lug around a 7-8 inch blade while hiking? It's overkill.

4-6 is plenty.

Leave the big knife at the camp site. Thats why they call them camp knives!

i agree with marcinek...who wants to carry a big 7+ blade while backpacking? well, i did ;). untill i realized that weight matters...haha. now i just take a mora ;).

I just camped for 4 days, biggest knife I used was my Ritter Grip...

Actually, it was the only knife I used...

Please, would like suggestions on the knife i should get, not what i shouldn't get. this is a general outdoors knife for when i go up to my house in vermont, i have to use a fixed blade daily there to baton wood, make fires, and everything in between. Right now i have a 5 inch puma hunters friend. I want something a little bigger, with more heft.

I checked out bark river, thanks for the advice, i like the bravo 2, its the right length and size but a little to pricey. the cheapest ive found it for is 170, i can get the junglas for around 140 with a sheath with the right coupon codes. Any other recommendations?

Ok, I'll vote for the Kabar Potbelly. If I was buying a knife in the 7" range, it'd be up for SERIOUS consideration.

Fallkniven A2 would fit your requirements, but i rekon is way too big.

the S1 would be pretty perfect.

Bk7 or you could just get an esse 6 its just a bit shorter then you wanted, but me personally if you need a decent sized knife often I'd just get the junglas. I'd rather have the extra blade length and not need it then to need it and not have it. Just my opinion of course good luck on your search.

I have a esee4 and a bark river north star.the esee4 has a weight and feel that says "use me", but it is a bit heavier.the bark river has the same length- the weight. I rotate both of them but feel better with the esee4.that all said if depends where you are. If in the majority of situations in north america, then a 4" blade with a SAK or multi-tool will do.but in some situations where it might be ultra thick, a machete will be what you would want. I also backpack, and a neck knife is the best.

Lots of choices. Stick to the 4 + inch range for hiking and backpacking. Ones I own and recommend:

Fallkniven F1
Bark River Bravo 1
Bark River Gunny
ESEE-4
Fiddleback Forge Production Recluse
Buck 119 (little larger but for the $$$, great knife)
ESEE-3
