I am saving for an ESEE Junglas but in the mean time, I need an affordable chopper. I have axes, hawks, saws and the like, but I have a need for a large fixed blade which works well for chopping.

I've looked at the Condor Hudson Bay, the Kershaw Outcast and some of the Ontario and KA BAR stuff. The BK-9 is great, but a little spendy for what I want right now.

Give me some ideas and what you'd go with!

The BK-9 is great, you could also look at the Kershaw Outcast which should be a little cheaper.

The KaBar "Cutlass" fits the bill perfectly. It's an awesome chopper, and the price is right. Should only set you back about $60 or so.

Gerber brush knife. Chops great, inexpensive.

I got my Ka-bar cutlass for about $40, just look around. Also, Ontario's 12" Cutlass Machete is a great chopper. It's 1/8" thick, flat stock, so it's 1/8" thick all the way down till the grind starts. The blade has to be sharpened, buy a file and some sandpaper, but then it's a good chopper.
It is longer, weight heavy in the front, and chops with more power than the Junglas, or the Ka-Bar Cutlass. Here's mine next to the Junglas the Ka-Bar and the Culberson Bolok I have. Convex the edge, add some better handle scales and you will have a great chopper!

PM me and let me know where you got it for that price if you don't mind!

I've heard alot of good things about the scrade schf9(import or domestic not sure) both on tactical knives mag. or knives illus.mag. can't remember where, also some good youtube reviews if that's your thing-it is 1/4" 1095 for less than $40-I haven't got one yet but will be ordering in a day or 2-the mag review, the guy was using the handle to mimic a step without bending or breaking the blade, some of the other reviews stated that they had been chopping quite a bit without chipping and still maintaining a good edge!
