Need a compass that does a little more?

Do a search on Silva OpenUp and you'll get a few places that sell them. They're cheap enough, around $25. Why don't they say what it's made of? And where is Peter Atwood in the midst of all this? :D

Where can you get it?
It may be more difficult to find than one might expect. I decided to run a Google search for the Silva Open Up. I couldn't find it available anywhere in America, and it's just mostly shown on web sites originating from Britain and New Zealand.

It looks like Surplus & Outdoors might be your best bet.

Esav, that's eerie. I was also looking at that thinking "Boy, one of those would be nifty in titanium or S30V"

"Use OpenUp to remove dirt from Windows"

I need it! :D

I'm betting high impact plastic. Since there's a compass embedded in it, I doubt that it can be made of any metal containing magnetic properties. Remember the old exhortation to never hold a compass level at your belt buckle?

I've sent an e-mail into Silva, asking them the composition. I'll report back when I hear from them.

Looks pretty handy but it appears to be made of plastic. Anybody know for sure what it's made of?

Some of the modern plastics should be fine for this application. There's some tough stuff being made.

I'm sure we'll get a message from Cliff soon telling us the maker should be making it in whatever damned stuff he wants and it's probably not much good if it can't survive 20 minutes in a Saturn rocket exhaust!

"Thank you for your e-mail. The material in the OpenUp is a special blend of plastics which is made to withstand the real use of such a products functions.
It is currently not for sale in the US but if you check with our subsidiary Brunton there might be so that they will pick this item up in the future."

Hope that this helps,

The ad I saw for it in my latest Shooters Association magazine claims that it "is available from outdoor adventure and camping shops throughout Australia".

I was going to have a look in the camping shop anyway and see if they have one. I'll let you know. If they do I can probably get one and send it on if anyone wants one. The price is $AUS39.95 which is around $US28 or thereabouts.

Would you be interested in buying one, for yourself? ;)

We could do with a mini-review, if you would be willing. However, if, after you merely hold it, you decide that it isn't heavy/heavy duty enough to be tough enough for the listed chores (see below), don't waste your money on it.

OpenUp soda/beer type bottles
OpenUp soda/beer cans
OpenUp plastic boxes
OpenUp sardine type boxes
OpenUp paint boxes
Use OpenUp to release the vacuum in glass tins
Use OpenUp as an ice scraper
Use OpenUp to clean the car vipers
Use OpenUp to clean the bottom of the camping frying pan/pot
Use OpenUp remove ski wax from your skis
Use OpenUp to remove dirt from windows
Use OpenUp Compass for SILVA 1-2-3 SYSTEM navigation
Hopefully the "car vipers" aren't vicious. ;)

P.S. I'm not personally wanting one, as I already have a sufficient number of compasses, and other miscellaneous tools that would accomplish those same functions. Thanks for showing it to us, though. :)
