Hello, all! I have been lurking around here reading threads and such for a couple weeks now, and registered because I figured I could get some good recommendations from you guys.
I am looking at getting my hands on a couple knives, a nice folder and a bowie. While in general, the cheaper the better with this type of thing for me, I really want some good quality stuff.
For the bowie, what I am looking for is something that holds its edge well and can be used as a chopper, generally wood 2" in diameter or less. Blade length in the 8-12" range would work best for me.
There are a couple things, superficially speaking, I have preferences for. I would like a metal guard, preferably brass, and a wooden grip. A full tang would be good, but is not a requirement.
As for blade material, I am fine with stainless or carbon steel, so long as it would hold its edge well and work for chopping.
Price-wise, for a bowie I would like to keep it $250 or less, as eventually in a year or 2 I am planning on getting a custom one made to my exact specifications.
Now, I also am in the market for a new folder. For this, being able to open packages, do some simple carving, and in general being used for a tool in my lab work, while also being nicer looking for in more professional situations.
I have a bit of a preference for this style of knife(I actually have owned one of these buck knives and it was decent, but the tip broke off)

I like having wood in the grip, so that is something I am looking for. What would be really awesome from my point of view would be if it had a damascus steel patterned blade. For this knife, I am looking for under $200, but up to $300 if it had a nice blade.
For both, it would be really nice to have production model knives that are currently available, due to the fact that I am moving and like the idea of being able to research them a bit and get some reviews over the next couple weeks while I move and then decide.
Any advice you all can give me would be great, especially for the bowie. I always could get another Buck knife for this purpose, but I figure it never hurts to try looking for something a bit nicer.
Thank you all in advance.
