I have an M16-04Z I bought new on 08/2004. My question is what steel was used in the blade?? I believe it was aus 6. I know now they use aus 4 in the zytel line but I thought that was a fairly recent change. any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance ahgar

I'm glad to here that. I don't know if aus 4 is as bad as people say but i don't want to find out. thanks again, ahgar

On my Point Guard, the blade steel is identified on the blade. I haven't checked out an M16 recently, but does it not have a marking on the blade near the pivot?

I own several M16 models, and not a single one has the steel marked on the blade anywhere. I also seem to recall the switch to AUS-4 occurring just this past year (2005), not back in 2004.

I'm not positive both changes happened at the same time, but... the newer, AUS-4 M16Zs I've seen also have a different clip, at least on the -04,-14,-02 and -12 models. The new clip is mounted right near the edge of the handle, so you don't have the entire round pivot boss hanging outta yer pocket. It's a definite improvement, IMHO, but as far as I can tell, only available on the knives with the crappy steel.

So if your knife has the new clip, it probably also has the AUS-4 blade. If it doesn't... well, maybe it does, maybe it doesn't...

I like the crkt m-16's. Had a friend's m-16 in my hand today and enjoyed playing with the opening system. you know ; the small arm on the blade that alows you to flick it open pretty fast. They just feel good and fit my hand well. I would be willing to pay a few bucks more to get one in ausa8 or D-2 or other goood quality steels. I even like the design of the knife. Has anyone herd of any future changes of steels ?
Thanks again,
Jay

Well if your right, and you sound right, then I oughta be pretty good. my knife was bought in 04. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the changeover took place fairly recently. thanks for the help. ahgar
by the way I emailed crk&t to get their opinion. if and when I get it I'll post here. thanks again.
