I really want a Benchmade 806D2, but for now I'm looking at alternatives for general utility knives. What should I buy?

I have been considering Kershaw, Spyderco, and CRKT, but I can't decide on what models.

If you could buy only one of each brand and could spend about $30-50 on each, which ones would you buy?

Save your pennies, and buy the Benchmade you want. One seldom regrets buying quality, and if you know you'll be happy with it, then why let a few extra bucks deprive you of your dream. We're not talking about thousands of dollers diffrence between truck models or house floorplans here! A folding knife is somthing most of us put in our pocket every day! Why walk around every day feeling like you had to settle for second best, if you could have spent another fifty bucks and never have to feel that way about your knife? Pick your dreams, some dreams you'll never be able to afford, the mantion on a hill, the classic car, the private jet, the 50ft Yacht, all may be beyond reach, but at least most of us can eventually afford the pocket knife we want! Just a thought! JDBraddy

Well, could just go out and buy it right now, but I'm not sure how I'd really take to actually using such an expensive knife! I wouldn't have too many thoughts over using a $30 Kershaw...

Get the 806. Then use it. Forget it's a hundred dollar folder and just use it. After you use it a few times you'll know why you spent the extra $$'s on it. Because it's a top shelf user. You'll probably not regret spending the money after you carry and use it for awhile.
As one Forumite puts it in his sig line:
"Buy quality and you'll only cry once."

I am in your shoes dude, and after lots of research, I say get a SOG Flash II. They made this knife for guy like us I hope to get mine in the mail tomorrow. Check out the specs. You will see this has got to best the best knife for the money, it costs less that the kershaw benchmade and spyderco equivilants, and if the base model isn't enough you can get a titanium coated blade and an aluminum handle for a few extra bucks

Another nice and cheap folder that has just come out is the Smith & Wesson HRT framelock. It is a Darrel Ralph collaboration, and can be found for around $35. And whats best is that it is like an EDC on steriods, 3.75 inch blade and two different blade styles.

That S&W does look like a nice inexensive knife...I'll keep it in mind.

Of course, you guys encouraging me to get the Benchmade doesn't help! I'm trying to SAVE money! :p

Spyderco Delica or Endura, Camillus EDC, or a Kershaw Leek. I myself am saving up for a 806D2.:)

Get a CRKT, Altough I agree you should get the best knife you can afford at all times, If your on a budget, I always go with CRKT.

Need I say more?

Just curious ... but why? Are you outfitting some friends? If you're buying for yourself, I'd second and earlier suggestion and recommend you buy just one that's a bit higher in quality. If you're outfitting some others, I always recommend Spyderco Enduras or Delicas in plain edge.

One pattern we all end up seeing years later is that we buy a succession of inexpensive knives, each slightly more expensive but better than the last. Why not skip the intermediate steps? Buy one quick & dirty, cheap but good enough folder for now, and then save save save for a finer selection of a few really good custom or semi-custom users.

One reason a Sebenza or a Busse costs so much more is that they do so much more, and last longer. And look better!

For the price of three or four cheapies, you can get one Benchmade. For the price of two Benchmades, you could get one Sebenza. For less than the price of two Sebenzas, you can get an incredibly beautiful custom.

Waste money sparingly, and save the rest for the best.

Take some sound advice that was learned from years of experience...Get the one you want. Anything less is a waste of your hard earned money. Sure you'll buy others along the way. The impulse buy is hard to resist at times (my recent purchase of a LM Squirt). The Benchmade appeals to you for a reason. Trust your instincts.

There is a certain joy in maturing and growing up and the entire process of learning to appreciate knives. Now, Esay, you seem to have grown up around a few knives and people who have taken the time to help you appreciate knives.

A newbie will have to learn a lot of things that you can take for granted. First off, he will have to learn how to sharpen and with which sharpening system he will be most comfortable with. He will have to learn what it's like to lose, misplace or have stolen a treasured knife. He will have to learn not to use his knife as a prybar or screwdriver and what will happen when he heats a blade till it glows orange. All these things will take some time and a few knives. It's what tempers users. Of course, safety and reliability will be a major concern which is why many of us have suggested CRKT. with the exception of the CRKT handle locks (K.I.S.S. series), their knives are well made of very good materials, designed by known and respected people, and crafted by competent people. Yes, they are made in Taiwan, but one must realize that "Made in Taiwan" is no longer the by-line of junk.

Well, after all this, I think I'll stick with the Benchmade. Where is the cheapest place for the 806D2?

BTW, answer the original question anyway! :p

I don't no if it is the cheapest but I would probably get it here-
newgrham.com or wait for one in the for sale forum. Who want's to own just one knife anyway?

Well, scratch the Chive...I checked one out in person and its way too small! Is the Leek much bigger?
