I know i said i wouldn't go asking for recommendations anymore but this is a special occasion. Coming up is my granpas birthday, he has carried knives with him for years.

I tried searching around google and the search function on the forum but i haven't really found much, im looking for a folding locking sheath knife, no pocket clip, kind of like the buck 110.
He is one of those older guys that doesn't like how things hanged, he doesn't see the glory in the new knives and likes pocket clip less belt knives.

I have been looking but besides the buck 110/112 i haven't really been able to find anything, he already has a classic 110, a chairmen 110 (its so nice im even thinking about getting one) a 112 and a custom 112 with mirror polished s30v blade.

I don't know if there is really much out there in this category but i feel like itd be a really nice gift for his 75th birthday. He still carries a knife every single day but hasnt gotten anything new because he says "There hasn't been a knife i have seen in years that is anything like what i got now".

If i cant find anything then im thinking i might buy him a custom made western designed leather sheath (hoping i could find a knife to go inside of it too though).

It isnt a rush because his bday isnt for 2 weeks and i wont get to see him for close to 3 weeks because he is going to be in the hospital for that week after and cant have visitors, Cancer treatment and they are scared at this point if he leaves right after he could get sick and even a minor cold could kill him, so they have been keeping him a week after each treatment and watching him to make sure he is okay to leave. :( The good news is if its all well he has almost beat the cancer and only has 2 treatments left after this.

I hope you guys understand how important this is and can look past who i am and what iv done in the past here on the forums and can try to help me out with this.

I promise i wont make any more "i need a edc blade under ___" threads ever again, iv learned my lesson and id like to try to earn your guys respect back. Im sorry for what i did in the past, i hope you guys can forgive me.

Forum member Redrummd has the Art in Stone forum under Hosted Knifemakers Forums. He rehandles knives with stone. Very nice stuff. I don't know what your price range but this might be a way to get a very special knife for your grandfather. He also sells on the popular auction site but I cna't remember his username there at the moment.

Price range is flexible for an occasion like this, if i think it'll be the perfect gift then ill be willing to get fancy.

If he wants a traditional sort of knife, then consider Queen, Schatt and Morgan, or GEC. Schatt and Morgan is the premium line. Just take a look at the Queen website for info. The Schatt and Morgan knives come in 154CM, and the Queens are in D2. Most of the GECs are in 1095. The GEC lockbacks are OK with good fit and finish. I have read that the linerlocks and slip joints can be hard to open, and have not tried them. I have had to return a number of these traditional knives to the manufacturers to fix lateral play, so you should factor in extra time for a possible return. Some have come to me in perfect shape, but others needed an adjustment. I don't like blade play. Order from a dealer with a good return policy.

If you want a smaller lockback that looks very nice and has a blade made of VG10, I can recommend Moki knives. They have some really nicely made lockbacks at a variety of prices. The more expensive ones are in VG10. They also have some slick fixed blade knives with Micarta handles that look like they would be good for bird and trout knives. I have a couple of very nice Moki knives - fit and finish is about as good as you get in production folders. They are highly recommended. Many of the large retailers on the net carry them. This may be a good bet for you.

When you say sheath knife, are you looking for something bigger? If not, AG Russell has some nice lock backs in the 2.5"-3" range

If you like that Kershaw, you might look at Al Mar knives. Their featherlite line are similar to that one (though they come with a threaded lanyard hole that comes with a clip--but remove it and you're just left with the lanyard hole). They also have fancier models with a steel bolsters next to wood/bone/pearl/etc. and are lock backs. Those run more expensive, however. Well for me, i dont care for them, but for my grandpa i know he would like them because he has all folding sheath knife hunters but he doesn't have any gents.

Pending where you are you could also look into Santé Fe stoneworks. They rehandle any knife in semi precious stones and woods. Some pretty cool stuff. My first gentlemen's folder was their 4in. linerlock with a VG10 core Damascus.

As for a traditional pattern, maybe see what he normally carries and get an upgraded version of that?

he might like the Gun Stock pattern, the larger one would need a belt pouch the smaller one is pocket sized, i carry one eveery day

Why not have a custom 110 made for him in Bucks Custom Shop. You can pick hanldle materials and blade steel. They do an outstanding job and are a pleasure to deal with.
