I was wondering about a good large fixed blade knife to chop with that is conferrable in your hand after chopping for long periods. I want a knife that is durable and long lasting. It doesn't have to be sharp I can sharpen it my self.

I would suggest a short heavy machete. Condor has a wide selection of these with the Pack Golok and Village Parang being my favorites. They run about $50 with the excellent leather sheath. Like them because they are easy on the hands!

For chopping how about a Kukri such as a Cold Steel. They have a budget model that fits your budget, you just need to put a better edge on it.

I would prefer a knife over a ax because I could also use it for cutting if I need to.

Agree, you need an axe. I've chopped with large knives and machetes but now with carpal tunnel it's painful an axe is much better.

edit: Just saw your last reply. Still an axe and a smaller fixed blade would be more practical.

Have a Axe for chopping and a knife for cutting. I have made"More that $50.00" and used many different big choppers of different brands and none of them work as well as a axe for wood chopping and get yourself a 4-5" bladed knife for your cutting and whittling and shaving wood. A Mora is a great low cost companion to an axe.

My big chopper-type knife is a Condor Hudson Bay. Pair it with a small inexpensive knife like a Mora, and you will still be within your budget and have greater versatility.
