ok i am giving my dad a hest as a gift and want to give him a folder to go with it. the problem is esee doesnt have a available folder and i dont have time to wait for the izula that i really want to give him or the hest folder. so i am in a spot for a good no bs folder. i have looked a zero tolerance but i am looking for sugestions on a esee type folder. anybody got any good ideas???
thanks
matt

What do you want the folder to do? The HEST is a small, utility, fixed blade. It fills the same niche that most people carry a folder for. I would consider a folder and a HEST sort of redundant. But, as far as folders go, the only one I carry anymore is a Spyderco P'kal. Having said that, the Spyderco Manix 2 looks pretty sweet too.

i carry fixed blades and am trying to get him to do the same. we kill knives very regularly, this is why i went to fixed and good knives not cheap walmart crap. its a ruff life on a farm, i think is all i need to say. the folder is what he prefers and i need a knife that will preform like an esee and is american made.

Indeed, and the RAT1 has the logo right on the blade.

all go choices and i looked at all of them and i am still looking. an ideas on low production knifemakers? i like to give different gifts, the ones were people look at you and ask who made that. i know i am being difficult, but i want the best for dad, hell at 61 he has earned it.

what is your price range? you could get a strider folder.

on the more affordable side you could get a cold steel tri ad locking folder.

I think a nice SAK or a small multitool like the Leatherman Skeletool compliment the HEST nicely. I carry the skeletool with my HEST and its nice to have a backup blade thats smaller and thinner with serrations. The only redundancy is that both tools have bottle openers :)

As far as folders, I second the recommendation for the Manix 2.

Kershaw has some good, solid "made in the USA" folders, so does spyderco.
The RAT1 mentioned above was made in Taiwan, but is an excellent blade.

I really like my Benchmade 940. Great blade design and keeps a very sharp edge. Axis lock is rock solid!

Mine has been in my pocket daily for many years and still looks brand new!

Spayderco Para (1 or 2), RAT 1, Spyderco Manix 2, Spyderco Gayle Bradley, Benchmade Mini Dejavoo , some Cold Steel stuff (don't know what models are good, or even available), Spydeco Tenacious...

Really all of those can handle hard work. And there are a lot more that I can't think of right now, but as gundude said the price range would help out

If it's something he'd be carrying around the Farm and already has the HEST, I'll second the Leatherman skeletool cx vote. It's real handy to always have pliers and screw drivers on you.

Benchmade Griptilian. No-nonsense, no BS, just a good working tool.

I second that. Benchmade's 154CM is the bee's knees. I love my Grip and carry it everyday. I will often leave the fixed blade at home and just rely on the Griptilian when I'm camping.

A great knife.
