Need a good machete

Hello knife buddies, I am looking for a decent machete to use around the yard and for camping. I want at least an 18" blade, and good corosion resistance, being that the few $5 machete's I have owned rusted to death before anything else. I don't want to spend more than about $30 though, this is something that I am going to beat the hell outta, and then leave outside in the rain in thanks of its hard work. Something basic and tough, no fancy handles or frills.

I don't think you're going to get a whole lot of corrosion resistance out of a cheap machete, but I do think that the Cold Steels have some kind of black coating. One site describes it as "black baked on anti rust matte finish." No idea what it is. Seems like Smoky Mountain Knife Works has Cold Steel machetes at a good price.

For $30, I'd get a Martindale from Daren Cutsforth at cutsforthknives.com. Good guy to do business with, and Martindale makes a good machete. Just wipe it down with an oily rag when you're done using it, and you shouldn't have any problems with corrosion.

Onterio they make them for the military. Also Becker makes one I can't remember the name.

Another vote for Cold Steel. I got one in May and used it in the yard all summer. Works great!!!

I have a Tramonti that seems to work pretty good and the price is right. :)

True, Tramontina makes a good, cheap machete for under $10. I have a couple, and they're well worth the cash.

That will leave the blade a rusty mess in a short period of time even if you get one of the coated blades. Martindale makes nice working machetes, but they won't react well to that, Barteaux is another solid choice. You are going to either have to accept the rust though or take the blade in out of the rain.
