I have been using a cheap utility blade to skin gut, and quarter out animals such as rabbits and squirrels. I would like a fixed blade knife that can hold a good edge, comes razor sharp and is easy to handle (not huge in size). Something that could last a lifetime with care. Any recommendations?

All depends on your price, but I have a Shrade Old Timer Sharpfinger that is the perfect size for small game...I'm in the market for a larger hunting/survival knife, but I like the Shrade for smaller stuff...they can be had CHEAP, too.

I recently bought a skinner from Nathan House. D2 steel, extremely sharp, and reasonably priced. I would recommend that you check out his work.

What is your price range?

Do you want stainless or Carbon steel? Or does it matter?

If your budget will allow, you will find no better than a knife from Bob Dozier or Daniel Crotts.

If your budget tops out at $100 then there are many good production knives in this price range that are still very good knives.

Bark River is a good brand that I use.

I have the following BR knifes that I use for hunting and really like them:

Drop Point Hunter - 3 3/8" blade, 8" overall, 6oz
Gunny - 3 3/4" blade, 8 3/8" overall, 5.6oz
Manitou - 4 5/8" blade, 9 1/4" overall, 5.8oz

My favorite for deer is the Drop Point Hunter or Gunny. ;)
For elk, the Manitou.

Many of the knives recommended in the thread seem to be custom knives that are a bit out of my price range. I have about $70-80 to spend.

I am not sure what the main difference between carbon steel and stainless is, but I would prefer something that stays sharp for a long while and is easy to re-sharpen. Which metal can do this efficiently?
