So,

I spent part of the day with Chuck Richards at his shop in Salem Oregon. I'll have to say I was in heaven.

I now KNOW I need to upgrade my Hammer selection.(And add a press, power hammer,mill..... lol. ;) )

I've decided to add one of Ed Caffrey's angle pien hammers, hammer1.5and2lb.jpg
and one of Tai Goo's straight peen hammers.

Here is my first ever knife, needs some work when I get my disc grinder and 2"x72" going next week, and my fresh from the forge second knife, a hidden tang.

Both are from 1080

Any other recommendations?  I'll be getting those two to start, but also want a smaller Japanese cutler hammer too.
If only Sam would finish his PILE of hammers!

Thanks again to Chuck. I was incredibly impressed with the knives he had lying out in progress. He was an excellent teacher and moved me forward a year in my learning curve.:D

Way cool hammers. I need to get a cross pein and some actual smithing hammers. I spent most of my time researching how and where to strike the steel on the anvil and that got me through well enough. I, too, am working on my first forged knife which is also my second knife from scratch. Forging is so much fun! I wish I could go hang out with some other knifemakers!

Brian,
It was great to have you down for the day. Just got an email from Steven, (thegeek), If you both would like to come down for a day and do some HT and maybe some more refined forging you are welcome.

Great choices on the hammers BTW. Keep on forging and we'll talk soon.

Oh and now you are fully hooked on this obsession. Might have ruined you showing how the power hammer and press can save you time and your arms.

Bet that was a fun visit. It's so nice to visit another makers shop. They can help you take years off the learning curve.

I have one of Ed's angle peen hammers. It's very nice. You won't regret it at all. Ed got the design right on these hammers. So much easier to use than a straight peen hammer.

Chuck, I was hooked before, It's over the top now after seeing the power hammer and press in action... Thinking I can cash out my pension??? ;)

LOL.

Ordering a smaller hammer from Tai today.

Yeah, that would be great. I'll e-mail Steven and see when I'm on call next.

I can see why Wheeler has drawers of forged, unfinished blades....

What do you guys think about Ed's double drawing hammer?

I'm going to order some 1/4" 1084 from Aldo this week too...
