Need a hat for work

Wasn't sure whether to post this in Wilderness and Survival or here, but I figured a hat would fall under "gear," so here goes.

I work at a big box home improvement retailer. I just found out that I will soon be transferred to the outside lawn and garden department. I keep my head shaved, so I need a new hat. OSLG employees are permitted to wear a straw hat outside, but I could probably get away with some kind of cloth hat.

So, I need some recommendations of different brands/styles of hats that cover the ears and neck but still look fairly classy. It also needs to be durable and easy to clean. My skin is fairly sensitive, so I will need to be able to wash out the sweat every other day, if not everyday.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

How about a boonie hat? Very durable and vey easy to clean.

I love mine.

If you really want to make a statement, try a pith helmet. Or you could go with the slightly less goofy look of a Tilley.

I'm in a simular boat. I shave my head and started a small organic truck farm business two years ago. Needed something a little classy and with character. I tried the Cabelas mesh hat mentioned above but the brim was so stiff, it didn't mold to my head well. I have a very goofy shaped noggin so finding hats to fit is tough.

I ended up going to WalMart and finding a "straw" cowboy hat with the one-size-fits-all elastic liner. Tore out the liner, added a hawk's feather to the band and I'm all classed out! I especially like how it breathes and with its wire rim, I can mold the brim to cover my neck well. I'm not worried about cleaning since it only cost me $9. When it gets too dirty to spray off with the hose, I just go buy a new one. They last me about two years.

I have something like this from Cabelas that I really like, but I haven't tried washing it:

For protection and washability, I would guess a boonie would be tough to beat but they aren't quite as stylish. :D

I really like the looks of that hat. I wonder if they have something like that at Academy Sports. I don't think my boss would be crazy about a boonie hat, unfortunately.

I specified washability because of skin. I had another hat that I was wearing and I guess I sweated in it a little too much, because it made a huge red ring around my head where it irritated my skin. Talk about embarrassing!

I might be able to pull off a khaki colored boonie hat if I kept it pretty clean. I guess I could buy 2 or 3 and keep a rotation of clean hats going.

I bought a Tilley about ten years ago, and never looked back. Comfortable and cool and looks pretty good.

That's my recommendation too.

Don't forget sunscreen, and apply it several times a day! First application about half an hour prior to exposure.

If you go with a Tilley, get one with the Air-Flo mesh. The canvas Tilleys can be very hot.

That Cabela's river guide hat is a good one too.

May be a bit more hat than you are looking for but I just bought an Akubra Cattleman in grey. They have quite a range and are smart as well as protective. US dealers at

Those are a little bit more hat than I need, and a bit more than I wanted to spend. I was thinking the Tilley's were too expensive, but if they last as long as the website claims, I shouldn't ever have to buy another one. I like the fact that they encourage the user to wash it.

I might actually have some money left over this payday, so I am going to spend some quality time with the Tilley's website tonight and pick out which model will work best. Thanks for all the advice!
