Hey, everybody.
Haven't been on in a while, but I'm currently working on a project in design school, analyzing a product. Naturally, I picked a knife. More specifically, I'm working on a multi-tool. I've carried a couple SAKs and Leathermans, but never really gotten into learning more about them.
What I'm looking for specifically is any information on the history of how they were developed (preferably a broad overview so I can touch on main points). I would also greatly appreciate any photos that I could use in my paper for strictly illustrative purposes. These will not be distributed, and ideally will depict unusual or unique examples of the multi-tool, and not a Victorinox that I can pick up at Walmart. I would also like to focus more on variations of the SAK, meaning one handle with multiple tools, as opposed to a Leatherman sort of design.

Any help is greatly appreciated
Thank you very much

Well a great place for getting details about something like the SAK would be the SAKwiki, http://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php

There you can find details on the "officer's knife" http://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Officers+Knife and the original SAK that started everything http://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Soldier+1890

For unique photos, there's the roman multi tool, but that was designed more for eating than anything https://images.search.yahoo.com/sea...oA?p=roman+multitool&fr=yfp-t-901&fr2=piv-web

For variety there's also the pictures of SAKs with stag scales, you definitely can't find those at Wal-Mart. https://www.google.com/search?q=vic...OdyATYqoDwDg&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg&biw=1366&bih=635

Any idea if the SAK is the origin of the multi-tool, outside of the Roman multi tool, or is there some middle-ground? I'd also like to consider other models such as the multi-bladed tools that Case puts out, (Case, by my understanding, was founded around 1889) as well any other brands.

There is a book on the SAK that includes some history. Let me know if you're interested and I'll dig up details.
