Hi this is DaQo'tah

I have had some trouble fileing the tang shoulders flat to match the guard.

I remember that someplace you guys talked about getting a type of jig that you use to make both shoulders line up and match.

where do I get one?

He makes two types.

You can make one yourself also: two bolts and two hardened bars,
drilled for the bolts with one side threaded.

If you do decide to make your own I would recommend using as wide (or thick) as stock as possible. Anyhere from 3/8 to 3/4 should work just fine. What I am trying best to convey is that if you were to use just 1/8 inch stock as the two pieces then the chances of having "perfectly" square shoulders are greatly diminished since we tend to round the sides or edges. (Uh, I tried using 1/8" stock before!) The wider the better but 1 inch may be overkill but would still work quite well. The $20 price tag seems like the best deal around. Its hard to make a quality jig for that price.

I also recommend hardening as well. I believe that one of the suppliers uses A2 to make the ones they sell but most any hardenable steel should work OK.

DaQo,

Make your own. I made mine out of O1 and it looks just like the one in the picture submitted by Ripper. Be sure to heat treat it and temper it to a high RC so it won't be cut so easily by files and belts but allow it to flex a little without breaking. Thicker is better but heavier and if using it for grinding the bevel heavier is more difficult to control well.

I like mine very well and use it for starting the plunge lines. It helps greatly in making the two sides match and at the angle I want.
