What kind of knife or tool would I use to trim 1/2 inch off the edge of my wall-to-wall pile carpet?
I’ve tried a razor knife as well as a hooked carpet knife & they just seem to shred the carpet edge.

I can't roll the edge to get to the back side of the carpet.

Any ideas? I was thinking maybe of Heavy duty scissors.

(If this is in the wrong forum, I apologize & ask a moderator to move it to an appropriate forum).

I used a spyderco with full serrates when cutting the carpet for my new apartment. I also found that if I cut from the bottom of the carpet, I got way less shreading. Just figure out the size you need, mark it off withe a sharpie on the underside of the carpet, and then cut with a sharp serrated knife. I would have used a carpet cutter with the heavy duty razor blade, but with all the money I spent of fancy expensive knives with nice steels, I didnt have any cash left over for a simple cutting tool. :D

Get the right tool. A double sided carpet knife (Roberts etc) with the thin replaceable double sided carpet blades. Everything else will just make a mess of it and make it fray out more. Carpet takes the edge off any knife in no time!

If you don't mind spending about $700 for a carpet cutter, I've been using a Phil Hartsfield with a 4" blade and with an occasional stroping has been working great.

I'd go with the Spyderco Military, which is also designed in such a way that your hand/knuckles will stay clear.

ARe you trying to lift it and cut, or cut it while its laying against the floor?

If your trying to cut it while its against the floor, you need to use a knife with a good belly like a hunter or skinner and use that section of the knife. It will cut much cleaner because there won't be a point dragging along and ripping at anything that doesn't cut on the first pass. You'll want it to be real sharp though and probably will have to touch it up a time or two depending on how much your cutting.

Go the the hardware store, Home Depot, they sell carpet cutting knives. Boomerang shaped with yellow handle. Takes long large double edged razor blade. Depth adjustable, locks with a knob Think it's made by Stanley. Less than $10.
Otherwise it's like cutting a loaf of bread with a sword -overkill.

No blade that I've ever used works as well as a tool that was intended for the job.

I'll second the Home Depot idea.

Ya, I think I've seen these as well, small curved blades and some had nice handles too. I think the ones I saw was Bosch (or something like that).

EDC? :D

Having done this on a professional level before I can say nothing I've tried beats a carpet knife.

Try a Stanley disposable blade made for carpet. You probably already have the knife handle. Just put this blade in it for a few bucks for 12 pack and that is all you'll need.
