Hey guys, I am new here, and needing a little help. I am wanting to buy my little brother a knife for Christmas (a am going to get a matching one). We have been using a knife my late PaPaw made for us which works well, but I cant stand the thought of losing it in the woods. This knife will be used for deer hunting and I want one that will last and not "turn an edge" as I have read about. I dont know much about steel, but want one that will hold an edge and is not extreamly hard to sharpen. I was looking at the Bark River knives but do not know what A-2 tool steel is. As I am sure you can tell, I am in need of some help. Recomendations, or information about good steel and where to find knives that fit the bill will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Give us more info on what you want. Start with what size blade you are looking for. Fixed or folder. Specfic point on the knife you know you would like? With this info you will get better suggestions from the folks here.

sorry, I am intrested in a blade between 3 and 4 inches, and a drop point (from what I have read, they are strong and durable, and I know they dont cut through the gut as easy as other types) I do not want a guy hook. Thanks again yall!

You can't go wrong with BRKT, Mike is a nice guy. If the knife you're looking at appeals to you and is within your price range, pick it up.

I do like their knives, and it is the type I am looking for. However, I would like to know more about the steel in them. I have also heard good things about 460c steel and AUS8. Do yall know any knives with either of these in them that fit the type I am looking for. Sorry to be the "annoying kid" but like I said, this isnt my area of expertise.

Aus8 is a decent steel when treated correctly, but it is on the softer end of steels. I would steer away it for your applications, but other than EDC folders, I do not have a lot of experience with it.

A2 is good stuff, as is D2. Either of these would suit your needs quite well. How much are you wanting to spend on these knives? BRKT makes really good stuff and I think you would be pleased with it. There are also a few custom makers that use premium steels in their fixed blades. D2 is probably the most prevalent right now.
