Hey guys, I've really fallen in love with my little DMT diafold stones, but I found that on my extra coarse stone most of the abrasives have been scraped right off the metal backing, leaving me with a mostly smooth and useless stone!

I like the portableness of the diafolds, but I've been wanting to acquire some larger bench stones for use with my large blades anyway, so can anyone recomend a good LARGE X or XXcoarse diamond stone that they have experience with? ....one that will not lose all it's grit the first few times I use it!?

I bought a set of ~2x6 diamond stones from harbour freight. The course one is 180 and it seems to be doing fine when I need to remove a fair amount of metal.

The best of the best for super stock removal is the DMT D8XX. It is crazy, and one of the few stones that can take putting a lot of pressure with no ill effects. I fully recomend it for re beveling knives. But- it will put an edge like a saw on the knife, so probably not great for a single stone.

The reason the diamonds are missing from your stone is because you used too much pressure. For whatever reason the DMT XC 220 mesh stone is more sensitive to pressure than any other, my XC benchstone and diafold are missing some diamonds too from my lingering heavy hand habits.

The DMT XXC borders abuse with the way it removes metal, like a wood chipper for steel it eats even the hardest metals like butter and unlike the XC or C it seems nearly impossible to damage. The only down side to using this stone is that it digs deep into the metal and if the following stone is not coarse enough or used long enough the scratches will not be removed.

You could also use a silicon carbide stone or a waterstone, I know you can get waterstones even coarser (80 grit) if you really want to make grinding quick.

Thanks guys for the info!

Yeah, I think the XXcoarse is probably more than I need. Too bad the XC seems to have problems with losing its abrasiveness!

I think I'm going to order a whole set of 8" stones, but now I'm having trouble deciding between the kind with the uninterupted grit, and the slightly more affordable kind with the sort of perforated look.?

You guys have any prefferences between these two? :

...or...

The continuous grit ones are more expensive and do not come with a base, are they really much better than the others? I've only ever use the "perforated" kind and I like them well enough, but I'd try the others if they are somehow better.

Not sure if this is a big deal to you, but the XXC stone has rounded corners, so you won't be able to sharpen knives at the kick if the edge stops right at that point.

Get the uninterrupted type as its a far better value . Just looking at the stones surface you get much more stone for the money . This equates to better performance and less time spent sharpening. DM
