I just got my new Starmate yesterday! Awesome knife. It's what everyone said about it and more. Only one problem->it's a righty and I need a lefty one. I took the metal clip off and attached a plastic clip with a short nylon loop just so I can wear the knife in my left front pocket. I asked before and was told that there wasn't a time frame for lefty Starmate production. Is there one now?

Greg - No immediate plans. We're having a hard enough time trying to make enough righties.

Yes Siree,
A left handed Starmate would be an answer to one of my prayers.
Or a Military.
My left pocket NEEDS a higher end Spydie!
As I've said before, I'm tired of messin' with the rest! Now I want the best!

Have either of you tried a BM Axis #710? IMHO this is the lefty's answer in a non auto.

Rick,
I ordered a BM Axis two weeks ago and ended up returning it because the blade was bent. That was the first BM I ever purchased. I decided right there and then to go with the Starmate.

grnamin, sorry to here about your bad like, but I image that is very rare. I am very pleased with mine and hope they make a AFCK with the axis lock. By the way the AFCK is available in left handed.

I carry an Axis in the left pocket every day, it's there right now as a matter of fact.
Problem is, I like Spyderco's products a lot, especially the Starmate, Military and Wegner, not neccessarily in that order and I want OPTIONS,

I love options!

I also like the idea of having right/left handed of the same models. Twins don'tchaknow?

Hi misque, I guess you are left handed? Which left pocket? I like it clipped to the left back pocket.

Greg, aren't spydie holes supposed to make the knife a bit more ambidextrous than thumbstuds? I'm also lefty, and I can open the Starmate (I have two) with either hand no problem... just needs practice.

Dan - The issue with lefties is more the lock than the hole. Most Spyderknives open easily with the left hand. Linelocks are not as ambi friendly.

I'll bring it up in the next R&D meeting. Maybe we can "squeeze in" a run of Military & Starmate "lefties".

Misque - We also love options. Unfortunately most dealers won't carry the odd balls, especially options, so the ELU never gets to see them. We make up an option and often they die on the shelf for lack of dealer support. This is especially true if an internet dealer advertizes the option at a very low price...then the other dealers won't touch them.

As far as I know, the only mirror image left handed liner locks in production with (licensed) blade holes are the Benchmade 800 and 812. It's been a while since anybody in the Benchmade Forum grumbled about them not being available in plain edge or M2 steel, since the standard rant over there is "When will the AFCK be available in an Axis Lock?" The conventional wisdom says "Not any time soon."

Lets see . . . 4 more SKU's to inventory - Starmate, Military, lefty plain, lefty toothy.

Spyderco now has a couple of elegant reversable clip setups in lockbacks (an ambidextrous lock type), and there is actually nothing wrong with a good lockback action in a high performance folder.

Dannyc,
I can open and close the Starmate with either hand. My only issue is really the clip position. I had hoped to transfer the clip to the other side, but soon realized that the screws are anchored by the extended plate of the liner lock. I tried wearing the knife in my left front pocket in its current config, but it just felt funny drawing, then twisting in order to open it. Two Starmates?! Man!

RGray,
I carry two knives. The right pocket is either a Military, Starmate, Wegner or the Carnivour. I switch off every couple of days or so just to keep things interesting.
I like the idea of carrying a left/right hand model of the same species. I trust my hide to the higher end Spydies on a regular basis, so why not carry a left handed twin of the one in the right pocket?
Nothing wrong with the Zytel ambi models, I own right&left handed Natives, Enduras, AFCK's and such, I just like the high end Spyderco stuff better. Really, It's the 440V and the liner locks that I like.
Spyderco does them right.
Okay, in answer to your Q, I'm ambidextrous and I carry in the front pockets. Easier for me to get to, generally speaking.

Sal, That is outstanding news! You just made my week!
Thanks!
