Making my first foray into putting a fixed blade together, and I have the below blade blank from Alabama Damascus. I'm having a hard time figuring out how I should shape my scales around that weird right angle at the base of the cutting edge. I dont even have an idea of what its for. Can anybody shed some light for me? Thanks!

I'd just blend out the scales to end on a line going straight up from the 90 degree angle on the front side of the finger guard. Being Damascus it is attractive IMO to leave that bit of the blank exposed there, showing off the steel itself.
Good luck with the project.

I agree. Start your scales right below the right angle section. It will make it a little easier for you while still showing off the pattern.

That "weird right angle" might be in case you wanted to add a bolster that would come down even with or even extend below it? Just my guess. Mike

I don't have much to add, but man that is a pretty blade.
If you look at the spyderco para 2 you can see how they do it. Although it's not a fixed blade.

Yep. That's for a bolster. A nickel bolster with stag scales would make that knife a real beauty!

Try cutting some ideas out of paper and laying them over the blank.
Quick and easy way to get an idea of what it will look like and easy to make changes.

I did this one with an Alabama Damascus blank a couple weeks ago.
I'm new to this also. It was fun and I like the way it came out.
