over the weekend my wife bought me a little buck 196 that is marked custom shop with an anvil over it. it is high polished with scales that are 2 piece. one is a dark material with jigging{either buffalo horn or something else black} the second piece up toward the cutting edge is a lighter tan color not to sure what it is. i've done several searches and have been unable to locate a knife that looks like it. it comes with a reddish leather sheath. The knife has one problem and that is the scale on the left hand side has warped and pulled away from the metal, i know buck will take care of it under warranty but i'm wondering if it would be easier to just trade it as is and let the new owner deal with it. any ideas as to value or age. thanks, ahgar

I'm pretty sure that I've seen one like that, but don't remember where. If it was me, I'd send it to Buck to be fixed.

Is it similar to this 532?

The 196 is a mini alpha fixed blade.

Send it back to Buck and let them fix it. Then if you want to sell it, it will be right, and you won't have to tell about the bad scale in your sale description.

If the mini alpha is like the dorado, you may be able to tighten down the torx screws.

yep that's what the scales look like. this is the mini alpha so no screws. was this a common pattern or does anybody know? thanks, ahgar

yours is going to be a custom, not standard.

Might send Joe an email.

ahgar,

Is this what your's looks like?

This one was made for Bass Pro Shop. If I remember their were three with different scale combo's. The one you have is Burl wood with Water Buff scales, jigged to look like Impala horn.

mine looks like the middle one except it does not have pins. did they start out without pins and add them or was it the other way around? so it's burl wood with water buffalo. thanks. anybody know a fair price?

So ahgar,
your's has no pins like this mid-year 196?

That is something I'd like to see a photo of. Is it mirror polished with the file work around the edge? It will be worth about 50-70 in it's current condition. I's say another 30-50 in fixed condition....that is if you find someone who wants it;).

well then i'll have to get the little puppy fixed so it will trade better. i really just didn't want to mess with sending it back to buck but i guess i will. as for a pic if you'll email me at jgp6204@att.net tomorrow i'll probably be able to get you a pic. yes it is high polish and has carving around the edge which makes it slightly uncomfy. also no pins. ahgar
