Hello everybody. I have a little situation with my Desert Roadhouse, and I'd like your opinion. Let me start by saying this is not a trash Emerson thread.

Yesterday after sharpening, my Roadhouse closed on my hand. Nothing bad, just a little cut that barley bleed. I was gripping it tightly with my thumb on the ramp. I did it a few more times to make sure it wasn't me moving the lock bar. I sent Emerson an email that day.

But this morning I was going out and I wanted to carry my roadhouse. So I had the idea that if I whack the blade it would move the lock bar over to a more secure position. I don't know why I thought to do this but I did. The surprising thing is, it worked. The first few times it closed but then it stayed open after a few whacks.

So what I want your opinion on is whether or not I should send it in. Do you think the problem is now fixed or should I send it in? Forgot to mention, Emerson got back to me this morning. They said to send it in. So again this not me complaining about Emerson, they said they would fix it.

Thanks in advance.

I would say that nobody knows Emerson knives better than the folks at Emerson. If you described a perceived failure of the knife, and they in turn said to send it in, then that's what I would do. No bad could come of letting the guys over there examine your blade, except being without it for a week!

So, did the lock bar move anymore or was it fine? Based on your next paragraph I'll assume that it wasn't.

Odd solution to the problem. I wouldn't recommend doing that again. It could have moved the lock bar the other way and accelerate wear or damage the lock face. If anything maybe just try to bend the lock bar instead of spine whacking. I personally wouldn't try to bend a lock bar though.

Well if it is not moving anymore then it is probably fixed. Since you tried fixing it after you emailed Emerson, I would email them again to get their opinion on it. Or PM EmersonRep.

Thanks in advance.

I hope your Roadhouse serves you well.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I think I'm gonna send it in. I was thinking of selling/trading the roadhouse. I don't want to give anyone a potentially dangerous knife.

Honestly I would spend the dime on the phone call to EKI, and I bet they answer the phone within four rings.

Talk to the experts.

But if I was you I would put the knife in priority mail to EKI with a service request form describing your PROBLEM, and let them service your knife, and get it tuned up for top performance.
