Specifically I'm looking for information and pics.... o lord, please, lots of pics, of the Ratweiler. A few months back I ran into some financial problems, and wound up selling off most of my high dollar toys, and canceling the FSH I had on order. Thanks to Christmas, I have just enough money set aside for a Ratweiler, or other knives in that price range. I know Swamp Rat's are the Mid Range busse line, and really like the look of it. Also, If I drop some money, this will probably be my last big knife for a while, so I want it to be something both practical for outdoor use, and something I won't regret buying. Okay, there ya go' have at it, help me convince myself that this is the one for me.

Sweeet! Thanks for the pics, it helps a lot to have the comparision shots. That looks like a lot of knife for the price. Paradiggum in that last shot, is it next to a SH-E?

Sure looks like a SHe to me. Nice shot. Easy to see the Ratweiler's lineage there!

Cheers.

Well, I was just browsing through GB&U and saw reference to the Ranger Knives RD9. After checking them out on the website, I think this is definately, the other knife I would consider instead of the Swamp Rat, and I believe I've heard they were made from surplus Busse blade blanks. Does anyone know how these two would stack up against each other?

Justin of Ranger Knives is a great guy and if we had to lose business to someone I wouldn't mind if it were to him. However, having said that I think you should buy the Ratweiler ;)

I happen to have both. I like the RD9 a lot. It will hold up to quite a bit of abuse. Justin stands behind his products. Having said all that my vote still goes to the Ratweiler. I just used it this last weekend to chop some branches so I could drag them out of the yard. I am happy with my Ranger knives and they are made of good steel but the Ratweiler wins in my opinion.
I have some of the early RD series knives and the edges are from my understanding a lot thicker than the current offering. The rest of the grinds are the same. I'm sending them back to Justin for the new edge treatment. That may put it on par with the Rats performance. I won't know until I get them back.
I certainly don't think you'd be unhappy with either but I like the Rat better. Of course there's the price difference.

I still like my Steel Heart best. :D

You mention the RD9 but I've compared mostly the RD7 and Ratweiler. I've got all three sizes and use the RD7 the most out of the three.

If the RD9 is made from Busse blanks, then are the RD9 knives INFI steel?

Well, thanks for the replies so far folks. I really want to go with the Ratweiler, but I just checked my mail, and found some unexpected bills. Looks like I will have to go with the RD9, or more likely, nothing at all for a while. :grumpy: Although, the dog skinner looks cool, and if I have the money in a couple weeks definately is a little cheaper than the Ratweiler. I may play in the swamp yet.
