I know very little about knives ! I want a fixed blade , the two i'm looking at are the (sog Seal Pup ) and the or the ka bar short . Need to know what one is better .

Thanks guys .

This is going in my BOB ....

seal pup is a great knife I've had mine for a bit and it's held up whell Ive battoned 2x4's with it and chopped a 1/3 in half...a little stropping on my beklt and it was still shavig sharp...It is now my diving and salt water knife...if it is a knife that will also see use as a primary woods blade you might want to consider something with a less tactical feel and a drop point style blade.

i dont think you will go wrong with either. though i think the pup comes with a crappy sheath, it can be upgraded easily.

Seal pup is a tough knife.
I have never heard of it failing. I know others who have used it as a dive knife.

The seal pup elite is also quite nice for a fairly inexpensive utility blade.

Between the Ka-Bar and the SOG, go with the Seal Pup. A much better knife for the money, in my opinion.

i vote for the seal pup
but may i suggest a few other knives? fallkniven f1, rat5, ranger knives rd6 and a few others i havent mentioned (but im sure other forumites will) all around the $75-$100 price range :)

I have only owned 2 SOG knives both have preformed poorly. I know a lot of people like them but SOG will never get another dime from me.
Ka-bar on the other hand has been very good to me.

Bikermike, I generally prefer carbon steel blades over stainless, and am in the process of getting rid of all my stainless blades except my two Seal Pups, which have preformed admirably. You can leave them in the trunk without worrying and they are great for dayhiking IMO.

What has been your bad experience with them?

Mike, I would also like to know. (sincerely)

Seal Pups suck at battoning !!! Sorry my mistake I was thinking of Clubbing, they suck at that as they don't last 5 minutes !!!!:D
Sorry about that it was in poor taste and as an animal lover I should know better !!!!!:foot:

I have actually never heard of any bad reports regarding the Seal Pups although after handling both I do prefer the Seal Pup Elite !
Please take the time to look around though as there are many fine knives in this price range !!!

I had a SOG Daggert, and a SOG Pentagon Elite II, I loved the lock and overall design of the Pentagon II, BUT I'd sharpen them up to a hair popping edge put it away and when I took it back out it had lost its edge with out any use. Ive been sharpen knives for over 35 years and this is the first time I have ever seen a knife loose its edge over night without any use. even real cheep knives don't do that. I have a suspicion that it may have something to do with the bead blast finish destroying the surface of the steel, but that is only my theory.

Don't worry about failure in a knife, unless you are very inexperienced with edged tools. Even then, using a knife as a knife and not a prybar will keep it in good working order.

Not much of a SOG fan as an outdoors knife and besides, Kabar is a better choice, Rat is better still. BRKT makes some excellent field knives and a few can be had for under the $100.00 price tag.
