Does anyone have a line on a good source for a cheap mig. I guess a 100amp model would be all I would need. I'mm looking in the $300-$400 dollar price range.

Last time I was in a Harbour Freight I notice they had 3-4 models and name brand. Tractor Suppy carries some models also.

Thanks Guys,

I plan on getting a porta-band from harbor freight anyway so I'll take a look at the welders while I'm there.

Might check local pawn shops too. Friend of mine works at pawn shops and was jsut complaining again this past thursday on how he always has extra machinist type tools and wlders and stuff.

Hey Mark, get a copy of the "Trading Post" that covers the Tidewater area down there. There is always someone selling something for cheap in there...I'm sure you could pick up a good deal on MIG welder used...

Mark, I got mine from Lowes, Lincoln 100 mig. I believe I gave $349 for it, I have ran over 12 pounds of wire though it and it does everything I need. I've made all sorts of welding dies for my press , tack billets together and weld on billet handles, plus a bunch of other non knifemaking things with it, one of the handiest tools I have in the shop.

Good luck

Bill

Just got off the phone with a guy that has a NIB Lincoln weld pac 100 for $275. I guess this doesnt have the gas setup but sounds like a good deal.

I picked up the welder, Was as described. brand new in box. Once I found an outlet in my garage that wasn't on a 15 amp fuse it worked like a champ. Jesse James look out. I've got a 5.0 ford v8 engine that's just dying to have a motorcycle frame built around it.

Mark,

You can convert that welder to gas very easily. Lincoln sells a kit to do it or you can assemble the parts on your own. I believe that all you need is a regulator, some hose and solid wire. You also have too change the polarity. there should be instructions inside the side panel.

It would be nice to have clean welds with no slag to mess with. I'm heading to the welding supply house this afternoon. I'll check out the kits. I want to pick up a good helmet. It's kind of funny. There have been a 100 things that required a welder in the past few years, now I cant think of anything other than a gas forge to build. Go figure.

Mark

It does work well and in some cases it works better than the gas(outside in a breeze). The flux core wire leaves behind a covering of slag real similar to a stick welder.

Mark,
If you can swing it, get one of those auto darkening welding hood. I picked up one at my favorite pawn shop and it's the best thing that ever happened for my welding.

I'll see about the autodarkening helmet. It would be nice. We missed having you at Trackrock Kit. We will be having another in the Fall. Hope you can make it this time.
